Kobe Bryant Needs to Win the MVP Award

  By Alden Gonzalez
04.10.2008 - Updated on 04.10.2008

This has to be the year.

Enough excuses about other players having better seasons, him being surrounded by a certain behemoth or other teams being flat out better.

Kobe Bryant is 29 years old. He’s been in the league for 12 years and for most of that time, he’s been the greatest player in the NBA. But for some reason, the three-time NBA champion has never won a single Most Valuable Player Award (All-Star Games don’t count).

That’s preposterous.

All those years he was one of the best players in the league on his way to a three-peat with the Los Angeles Lakers, Shaquille O’Neal was the dominant force. When he was averaging 25 and 30 points per game in the beginning of the 21st Century, Tim Duncan was winning championships. And when he lit up the Toronto Raptors for 81 points to highlight one of the best seasons in recent memory, Steve Nash was making his teammates better, and Kobe’s Lakers were simply not good enough.

You can’t deny him again.

If not for statistics or overall talent, than Kobe needs to win the MVP just because the best player in the league should have one already.

Think about the season he’s had. Let’s look beyond the fact that he’s averaging 28.7 points, 5.4 assists and 6.4 rebounds on a team that’s 53-25. How about the fact that on top of putting up these monster offensive numbers, Kobe will guard the opposing team’s best offensive player every single night. Do you have any idea how draining that is? Not to mention having to go back on the other end of the floor and face constant double and triple teams.

The excuse for not giving Kobe the MVP his first few years was because he played alongside Shaq. Fine. Then it was the fact that his team wasn’t good enough. That’s OK. But now, all the stars are aligned. His team is one of the best in the NBA and a legitimate championship contender (if not the favorite).

But he’s surrounded by great players.

Hold it just a minute. Except for Pau Gasol and Derek Fisher, this is the same team that was considered “not good enough” for Kobe to be MVP worthy. Fisher is a role player on that team, and Gasol has only played 23 games for the Lakers.

Let’s rewind back to November. Way before this team got Gasol. You know, when Kobe’s supporting cast was considered a barrel of scrubs. So much so that Kobe was dying to get out of Los Angeles. Well, before the Lakers acquired Gasol on Feb. 3, Bryant had his team at 30-15. And with Gasol being in-and-out of the lineup in recent weeks, and Bynum having missed 43 games and counting, Kobe still has his Lakers right on top of the talent-cluttered West.

Yes, Chris Paul has exploded onto the scene and accomplished things as a 23-year-old point guard we never thought were possible – scoring, distributing and (oh, yes) playing defense. Thanks to him, the New Orleans Hornets have shocked everybody and now hold a two-game lead on top of perhaps the most competitive Western Conference ever.

Kevin Garnett has recaptured the fire we knew he had and has led the Boston Celtics from last to first in one season. Now that he’s on a national stage and out of the slums of Minnesota, the world is getting a chance to see just how good he really is.

And LeBron James is continuing to set new heights in the sport with his athletic ability. No matter how bad the supporting cast on his Cleveland Cavaliers might be, James’ presence at least leaves the chance of a title.

But Paul needs to wait his turn (like Kobe did), Garnett is surrounded by two future Hall of Famers still in their prime, and LeBron’s team probably won’t be a factor in the playoffs.

It’s time to give it to Kobe. He’s the greatest, smartest, most polished player in the NBA. He has three rings. He’s kept a team that’s been injured and hasn’t had a chance to mesh on top of perhaps the most difficult conference ever. And he dominates on both ends of the floor.

If that’s not MVP worthy, I don’t know what is.

First off, I didn’t delete any comments from here. But let’s try to be civil, though. I’m surprised at how many of you are pushing for LeBron when, as someone wrote, he’s probably fourth in the MVP race right now. I thought there’d be more KG supporters out there, but not one. .

lebron deserves it?! y the hell does he deserve it wen his team is stuggling and hes not even in the top 3 in the east??? lebron, how did he impact players? all he did to change a team is complain to recieve new players. and they arent doing anything!!! the only place lebron is taking his team is home after they get knocked out in the 1st round. kb24 fears??? hes the guy that strikes fear into the eyes of opponents when he has a ball in his hands. hes the man who has traind so hard to get where he is today. everyone calls him a crybaby. i call him a leader for calling out his team and organziation. they are pulling their own weight better now. and if lebron says kb24 if better, then u gotta believe em. true leaders know their weaknesses and lebron knows kobe is better. .

i know CP3 is a MVP type of a player but u gotta face it that it is Kobe’s year now. He has led the lakers and has turned them into a contender. Kobe proves his value to his through his leadership both in offense and defense. He’s tasked to hit the big shots and guard the opposing team’s best player everynight. If the Lakers didn’t have Kobe, they’d have a hard time even winning 20 games. Their team got a alot of potential with Odom, Gasol, Bynum, Farmar and the other Lakers but they need Kobe to spark them, they need his leadership. his the ignition to a big mean Laker machine. And that’s what an MVp is. .

and plz dont say he doesnt have the ability purely becoz he hasnt scored 81 points... paul once scored 61 (yes only in high school but cmon...) purely coz he wanted to score a point for every year his grandfather had lived. (only a week after his grandpa passed away.) now thats mental! .

P.S - paul needs to wait his turn???? wah! u r a crazy kobe lover and completely idiotic! paul leads his team in scoring AND assists plus steals and has the ability to score just as good as kobe on 5 or 6 less shot attempts. .

first up. just coz fisher and gasol are the only additions to the team, that doesnt mean they arent a better team than they were before. vujaic has become a top 5 shooter in the league, odom has realised he is a frikin beast, radmanovic is one of the best bench players in the L and the whole lakers bench is easily top 3 in best benches in the L. also u cant say lebron cant win MVP coz they wont be much of a contender in the playoffs. 1. its the REGULAR season MVP not playoffs... 2. look who won last year and how his team fared... u gonna take away dirks trophy now? (he probably deserves to lose it haha) anywayz im out. peace .

HAHAHAHA! Jimmyhohn, Chico, and the other guy, make me laugh.. Its almost a written fact that kobe bryant deserves this years MVP. Lebron and the Cavs are nowhere close to Kobe and the Lakers and if it wasn’t for injuries, they would be on top of the West. CP3 and the Hornets just got lucky because his supporting cast hasn’t been plagued by injuries, unlike the Kobe’s Lakers who have been playing wounded and missing key players night in and night out and still are good enough to be among the leaders in the competetive west. Kobe is the best player in the league right now. He the best both in offense and defense. The cavs are just like Lebron’s jumpshot, they’re inconsistent. Lebron got better numbers than Kobe this year because Lebron is on a team that sucks. The cavs are lucky they belong to the east because if they were out in the west, lebron would get criticized everynight because his team would lose everynight. Kobe is this year’s MVP, not CP3, and theres no denying the fact. Those guys who wrote that Kobe will be the MVP are smart unlike the other three. .

LOL at the 2 comments saying Lebron will win it.If you guys have been paying attention, Lebron James is most likeley out of the MVP race. It’s between Chris Paul, Kobe Bryant, and Kevin Garnett. Lebron James is the 4th choice, maybe 3rd if lucky. .

Oh, you deleted my comment, eh? Didn’t like what I wrote? What a hack. Kobe is not going to win the MVP. Such a fanboy, posing as some sports authority. If you go by numbers, Lebron wins.If you go by the impact the player has on his team, Lebron wins.If you go by talent, lebron wins.I’m sure you’ll delete this comment too. .

Dude, Kobe will not win. I cannot understand how people think he’ll win the MVP. First of all, he doesn’t deserve it. Without Gasol, the Lakers were not even a good team. Lebron will win it. Lebron deserves it. And Kobe Bryant once again will take his Lakers nowhere without Shaq. .
