Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird to Play Part in USA Basketball

07.28.2005 - Updated on 07.28.2005

The Washington Post has reported that a number of NBA greats - including Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Clyde Drexler and Chris Mullin - are to be involved in the selection of the next USA basketball squad. With Phoenix CEO Jerry Colangelo also helping to assemble the roster, the team looks to improve on its disappointing bronze in Athens and the infamous sixth-place finish at the 2002 world championship, which was held in Indianapolis.

It is said that the selection board is aiming to enlist twenty-five players for three years of international basketball, which would include next year’s world championship in Japan and the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Insiders claim that the committee is hoping to attract primarily younger stars such as LeBron James, Amaré Stoudemire and Dwyane Wade.
