One gone Laker: Kobe Bryant, Andrew Bynum, and Pau Gasol’s contracts make re-signing Jordan Farmar difficult

October 22 08

Jordan Farmar could be collateral damage. With Los Angeles on the hook for several big-ticket contracts, the Lakers will have trouble keeping their up-and-coming point guard.

In theory, the NBA’s soft salary cap allows each team unlimited resources. In reality, there is only so much money. Exceeding the luxury tax draws a dollar per dollar fine, so things get expensive.

Now consider the Lakers’ long-term salary structure. Conservative estimates have Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol earning a combined 41 million dollars, while Andrew Bynum likely gets extended for 12-15 million dollars per season. The total is 53 million dollars for three players.

The supporting cast isn’t cheap. Los Angeles annually drops 22 million dollars on Derek Fisher, Vlad Radmanovic, Luke Walton, and Sasha Vujacic. Those seven players alone put the purple-and-gold over last season’s luxury tax limit of 72 million dollars.

This is a projection. Some contracts could be moved. And Bryant most certainly receives a raise when he opts-out next July. But before dismissing these calculations as Enron blasphemy consider three points. First, the economy is teetering and revenues could decrease, which means less money for salaries. Second, these figures account for seven players. Most teams carry fifteen. And third, Lamar Odom hasn’t received a dime yet.

Paying Bryant, Gasol, Bynum, and re-signing Odom squeezes the Lakers. No other player could realistically earn above the mid-level exception. Valuable role players and blue-chippers may head for greener pastures elsewhere.

Losing Farmer, who averaged 9.2 points per game in 20 minutes of work, is a strong possibility. In limited playing time, he has shown speed, handles, vision, range, and tenacity. Best of all, the former UCLA Bruin has a high basketball IQ, reminding me of Toronto’s Jose Calderon.

No change is imminent. Los Angeles can keep their budding table-setter for three more years. The team holds the option for 2009-10 and can qualify him in 2010-11. An extension is doubtful, compromising six years of development.

Having several stars will be the Lakers’ luxury. Having anyone else could be the challenge.

Martyz, you make it sound so simple. Bring in Rose? Yeah I’m real sure the Bulls are gonna trade him for anyone on the Lakers. .

The Fakers needs to get rid of Bynum because he is asking too much money and the Fakers will go way above the salary cap. Also Bynum will ruin the Fakers’ chemistry because h always wants to score more than anything and he yells at his teammates like to Sasha, Farmar, Walton, or Radmanovic if they dont pa-------him the ball. He will ruin Pau Gasol’s dominance and Kobe will receive much less touches. .

in order for a good trade to happen, you have to give up something good too. .

Walton, Vlad, Mihm, Karl need to go for a few YOUNG players. Fish will become an asst. coach & bench player, Add it up & you have the money to resign all your top players. (Sasha as an outside shooting guard/small forward) (Farmar starts for Fish, bring in say Rose & the Bulls young Florida center & all is well in lakerdom...Marty .

I think Jordan is the least of their worries. Farmar is an LA guy. He grew up in Los Angeles and played at UCLA. I don’t think he’ll be worried about market value. I think he would be more than content with the midlevel if the Lakers can offer him a starting position. .

farmar is the pg of the future for the lakers, they have to keep him...vujadik is expendable and can be replaced by trevor ariza, sure they lose a 3pt threat, but as soon as coby karl steps it up, they wont need vujadik anymore. this also creates more playing time ariza and walton, which are both much more valuable to the lakers. sure sasha adds that pint of dirtiness and annoyance as a defender, but expendable nonetheless. vlad is useless; sadly so is mihm,. and chances are the lakers are going to have to give up odom if money is too tight. if bynum was smart, he wouldnt be asking for so much damn money, cuz he hasnt proved anything since his injury and even though kobe is great, he should take a damn pay cut this nxt time round if he really wants to win. it’s not like he doesnt have enough money + he should realize that the lakers have been trying to rebuild the team around him and if he wants more money, how the hell are they going to do that? .

Farmar will definitely be starting once he shows the ability to stay in front of people defensively. Can’t just throw people into the lineup because they can score. Derek Fisher is a valued player for reasons beyond being a good spot up shooter .

boo hoo poor Farmar. He can be repleced, it’s a none factor. He’s a solid player, but the others are harder to replace .

i agree, Farmar has been ballin lately and should start soon. They need to let Odom go and resign yungsters for the future Farmar and Bynym FOSHO. Kobe will opt out and sad to say might not be back as a Laker, but in a good side Lakers will have $$ to resign young katz or sign a superstar free agent next summer. .

This is a good point. The Lakers will be top heavy with too many stars that supporting players could be lost! .
