Kobe Bryant’s Posturing Keeps Pressure On Los Angeles Lakers To Improve

July 21 07

Chris Sheridan updates Kobe Bryant’s status with Los Angeles Lakers:

Despite being given numerous chances to clarify his position on his future with the Los Angeles Lakers, Kobe Bryant on Friday declined to bring any clarity to his situation.

"I understand the interest in the situation, and when the time is right, I’ll be more than happy to answer those questions," Bryant said after practicing with Team on day one of the national team’s three-day minicamp. "Right now we have a lot to accomplish, and I don’t want to detract from that or be a distraction from that."

Asked when exactly the time will be right, Bryant said he did not know.

"It’s about going forward and handling the situation the right way, and handling it behind closed doors within the walls of the organization, and doing it that way," said Bryant, who has failed to clarify his position for seven weeks now since going on 1050 ESPN Radio in New York saying he wanted to be traded, then altering his position in subsequent interviews later that same day.”

When asked if the signing of Derek Fisher, the drafting of Javaris Crittenton and the re-signings of Chris Mihm and Luke Walton were enough to placate his desire for an upgrade to the Lakers’ roster, Bryant’s initial answer did not make a lot of sense.

"I think they’re a helluva basketball, um, a great addition, I have to say, to the team. I think it was important to keep Luke, and Fisher I talk to all the time, and I’m extremely happy for his family, and I’m happy for Chris as well. I reached out to him."

My Quick Take: There’s absolutely no point in Kobe Bryant revealing his intentions to the Lakers’ front office.

Right now, Bryant, because of his opt-out clause, has leverage over the Lakers. In two years, the superstar could exercise a provision in his contract and become an unrestricted free agent. The purple-and-gold would get nothing in return if Bryant signs with another team. The Lakers would never recover from his departure.

The team is aware of the leverage Bryant’s contractual status provides. So the Lakers, once one of the NBA’s proudest franchises, have been reduced to the role of servant, catering to the whims and wishes of their superstar.

Is this right? Probably not, but Bryant’s cries for better teammates have injected some urgency into a stagnant and stale organization. They’ve been forced to step-up their off-season game, chasing Kevin Garnett, Jermaine O’Neal, and Richard Jefferson.

By refusing to publicly commit to the Lakers, Bryant is keeping the pressure on the Lakers to better his supporting cast. Without his posturing, the team would likely hit the snooze button and trot-out the same broken formula as the last few seasons. So you may not like or appreciate his methods, but there is something to Kobe’s madness.

I agree with romeoT. The lakers were 4th in the west and could have even make 3rd in the west. If it wasn’t for the injuries, the lakers would not have to face the suns in the first round. They would pa-------the first. By the addition of D-fish it will make the lakers even more better. All they need now is one wellknown, good and experience player. GO LAKERS!!!! .

LAKERS dont need to trade KB. The lakers were winning before th injuries. Kupchak needs to get MUTUMBO. He would a good help for in the paint. I can see it now....D-fish point guard, Bryant-SG, Walton-SF, Lamar Odom-PF and Mutumbo-C. Thats ba good match. GO LAKERS. .

I agree with Laker Guru, bringing those players back are solid moves. Lamar Odom was a great #2 option until he got hurt than he didn’t play as well. I honestly believe this could be a good year for Bynum, it’s his third year and he’ll have alot to play for with Kobe talking sh*t about him, others coming down on him, a potential contract extenstion soon. And most of all to prove he’s not a bust and can be the next great laker center. Now agree the Lakers still need to make atleast one more big move to make some noise in the West. But look at the teams who win championships in all sports, they have good solid role players around thier superstar. Kobe is getting plenty of that now. A key thing to remember people is the Lakers were actually the 4th best team in the West until the injury bug hit. That’s been their problem these last few years. If they can stay healthy and consistent, the Lakers aren’t as bad as most people think. .

wat the hell laker guru they had all of those players besides fisher last year and they really didnt do anything. they are still lacking a second scoring option which is the only thing that can make kobe happy at the moment. All he wants is somebody to pa-------to i guess. Either way the west is just so dominant it dusnt really matter if they bring a richard jefferson they wont make it far. the only teams that are in the west that will greatly improve is the nuggets and portland. myself hating both teams being a clippers fan. .

The Lakers do have to make 1 or more big trades, like the Shaq type of trade (center), a Lebron James or Rasheed Wallace (power forward), or a Steve Nash/Jason Kidd or Manu Ginobili or Tony Parker, playing together with Kobe. Otherwise, they won’t get past the first round of playoffs and will continue to be run over by the West powerhouse teams. Or Kobe will play with another team like the Phoenix Suns, San Antonio Spurs or L.A.Clippers. .

Your English and your hoops knowledge seem to be a wee bit off their O.G. I must disagree with the things you say. Lakers have made key moves by surrounding Kobe with quality solid players like Walton, Fisher and Mihm. I think Turaif is another key guy to bring back as well .

Let’s get one thing straight. The Lakers haven’t really doen anything yet. The Lakers have now new players, D-Fish doesn’t count. Until they actually bring a brand new key guy that can be a big difference maker, I’m not letting the front office of the hook. .
