Miami, FL (Basketball News) - Dwyane Wade scored his team’s final 17 points, including a pull-up jumper with 2.3 seconds left, as the Miami Heat came from 13 down in the fourth quarter to defeat the Detroit Pistons, 100-98, at the AmericanAirlines Arena.
Wade finished with 37 points and eight rebounds and Shaquille O’Neal recorded 31 points and eight rebounds for Miami, which won for the sixth time in its last eight games.
"It was a big win," said O’Neal. "We just came out and fought hard. It felt like at times it could slip away but we kept on fighting and now we just need to develop some type of consistency."
Chauncey Billups led Detroit with 29 points and 10 assists, as the Pistons lost for the third time in their last five games after starting the season 39-6. Richard Hamilton tallied 25 points while Rasheed Wallace added 21 for the defending Eastern Conference champions.
Trailing by 13 going into the fourth quarter, the Heat scored the first eight points to cut the deficit to five, 84-79, with just over eight minutes left to play. The run was sparked by O’Neal, who recorded five points.
After a Wallace field goal pushed the Detroit lead to seven, 90-83, with five minutes left, Wade took over, scoring seven straight points to tie the game at 90-90 with 3:30 left to play.
The Pistons received two huge three-pointers from Hamilton and Billups in the last three minutes, but Wade continually answered each shot with a basket of his own, leading up to the dramatic game-winning shot.
"I put it on my shoulders at the end," said Wade. I tried to make some plays. I went through a tough stretch but my teammates gave me confidence."
"We don’t usually lose games like that," said Billups. We gave that game away."
For much of the first half, the Pistons and Heat played a tight contest, exchanging the lead seven times. After Udonis Haslem hit two free-throws to bring the Heat within one, 41-40, with less than six minutes left to play before halftime, Detroit seized momentum.
Sparked by a Carlos Delfino three-pointer, the Pistons scored six straight points en route to an 18-9 run to close the half and give them a 10-point lead, 59-49.
While Wade struggled in the first half, shooting 3-for-8 for just eight points, O’ Neal kept the Heat in the game, scoring 20 of his 31 points in the half, his highest total in a half this season.
