NBA Game Summary - New Jersey at San Antonio

01.10.2006

San Antonio, TX (Basketball News) - Tim Duncan racked up 27 points and 12 rebounds as San Antonio stopped New Jersey’s 10-game win streak with a 96-91 victory at the SBC Center.

Tony Parker scored 18 points and Manu Ginobili added 16 as the Spurs ran their own home win streak to 12 games. The defending world champions are 17-1 at the SBC Center this season.

Vince Carter poured in a game-high 34 points for the Nets, who hadn’t lost since a home setback to Charlotte on December 14. Jason Kidd compiled 15 points and eight boards in the setback.

New Jersey played without guard Richard Jefferson, who was forced to leave Sunday’s contest at Toronto because of back spasms and did not dress for this game.

The teams were deadlocked at 63-63 late in the third quarter before the Spurs pulled ahead with a 7-0 run. Parker and Duncan sank back-to-back jumpers to start things off and Bruce Bowen capped the spurt by sinking an outside shot with 45 seconds left in the period.

The Spurs later put things out of reach after reeling off 11 straight points early in the fourth quarter. After a layup and free throw by Duncan put the hosts ahead 79-67 with 7:31 remaining, Ginobili and Duncan each made two free throws to extend the margin to 16 points.

The Nets made a late surge and got within 91-86 after Carter hit two from the line with 25 seconds left. Ginobili was then immediately fouled and made 1- of-2 shots before Kidd missed a three-point try and Duncan pulled down the rebound. The All-Star center was sent to the stripe and sank both attempts to give the Spurs a significant 94-86 lead with just 16 seconds to go.

Nick Van Exel’s three-pointer midway through the second quarter sparked an 8-0 run that put San Antonio up 42-31 late in the first half. Carter buried a basket from beyond the arc to close things out and sent New Jersey into the break trailing 49-41.

The Spurs maintained an eight-point cushion early in the third quarter before the Nets embarked on a 10-0 run to move in front. Kidd netted the final four points, including a jumper with 5:43 left in the frame which staked New Jersey to a 57-55 edge.
