NBA Game Summary - Portland at Atlanta

11.27.2005

Atlanta, GA (Basketball News) - Darius Miles drained a turnaround jumper from the right side with 1.2 seconds remaining to give the Portland Trail Blazers a 77-75 victory over the Atlanta Hawks at Philips Arena.

Zach Randolph notched a double-double with 24 points and 15 rebounds for Portland, which snapped a two-game losing streak.

Martell Webster contributed 10 points off the bench to help the Blazers win for the ninth straight time over the Hawks.

Al Harrington led Atlanta with 16 points and Zaza Pachulia added 15 points and grabbed 10 boards in the loss.

Joe Johnson also tallied 15 points for Atlanta, which had a two-game winning streak snapped after starting the season 0-9.

"We just came out here and played as hard as we could, but came up a little bit short," Harrington said. "We had a chance to win. We just have to go back to the drawing board and have a good practice tomorrow."

Feeding off their momentum at the end of the third quarter, the Blazers opened the final period on a 10-2 run capped by a Jarrett Jack jumper to take a 66-65 lead with just over eight minutes to go.

The lead switched hands several times late in the game, with neither team able to break away.

A Randolph jumper gave Portland a 74-71 lead, then after a Johnson jumper on the other end, Miles made 1-of-2 from the foul line. Johnson then drained another mid-range bucket to tie the game at 75-75 with 49 seconds left.

Webster had a shot blocked by Josh Smith with just over 40 seconds to go, and Johnson missed a jumper with seven seconds to play, setting up Miles’ heroics.

The Blazers called a timeout after Johnson’s miss, and Miles drained a 12- footer with one second left to put Portland up 77-75.

A Salim Stoudamire 18-foot jumper at the buzzer was off the mark, giving the Blazers the victory.

"We kind of figured they were going to switch (on the last possession), and Zebo (Randolph) handed it back off to me and I just took the last shot," said Miles. "I was glad to have the opportunity to decide it."

Portland took a 25-18 lead after one quarter, as both teams struggled from the floor.

The Hawks used an efficient second period to take a 41-39 halftime lead. A 9-2 run gave Atlanta a 39-34 advantage with just under three minutes remaining. Pachulia started the spurt with a short jumper in the lane and Smith capped it with a layup in traffic.

Portland came back to tie the score, then two Josh Childress free throws with just under a minute to go gave Atlanta its two-point cushion at the break.

Randolph led all first-half scorers with 14 points, while Atlanta converted on 17-of-21 attempts from the charity stripe.

Atlanta opened the second half on a 10-2 scoring streak to open a double-digit lead. Two Smith jumpers and a Pachulia layup off a great feed from Johnson triggered the run.

After opening up a 63-50 lead, the Atlanta offense became stagnant and Portland trimmed the deficit. Jack, Webster and Randolph drained jumpers to get the Blazers within 63-56 after 36 minutes.

Portland also defeated Atlanta by late-game heroics on November 5, when Randolph drained the game-winning free throw with two-tenths of a second left to give the Blazers a 94-93 win... The Blazers are 2-5 on road this season...Portland has won four straight at Atlanta...Atlanta is now 0-10 versus the Western Conference this season...Smith scored 14 points in the loss...Blazers forward Theo Ratliff blocked five shots in the victory.
