Allan Houston’s Four Best Options After Quitting New York Knicks

October 20 07
Allan Houston released this statement announcing the end of his comeback with the New York Knicks:
"After much consideration, I have decided to end my comeback with the Knicks. While my body and my knees, in particular, feel fine, I know what’s required for me to be truly effective in the NBA again, and it involves a timing and progression that would not be fair to Isiah and the Knicks right now. With the season opening less than two weeks away, I think it’s best for the team to move on without me. I appreciate the opportunity that Isiah and the Knicks have given me, and I wish the team nothing but success." (from www.knicks.com)
My Quick Take: Houston officially pulled the plug on his comeback with the New York Knicks. But did it ever really start? The classy two-guard joined the club two weeks into training camp and New York coach/GM Isiah Thomas gave Houston no chance of making the squad, telling reporters journeyman Fred Jones had the inside track on the last guard spot.

So where does Houston go from here? Well, let’s look at his options:

1) Houston, for whatever reason, wanted to play for the Knicks. If this is still the case, he could continue working out privately and try filling-in as a replacement for an injured player. This option may seem unlikely, but Houston’s statement leaves the door open to returning by using the words "right now."

2) Houston, if he wants to stay within the Knick organization, could land a job in the front office. But what job would he get? Would James Dolan, the team’s owner, hire Houston as an assistant or bring him in to replace Isiah Thomas as GM?

3) Houston could try and land a roster spot with another NBA team. His best option may be across the Hudson River, where the Nets had interest in his services this past summer. And the Celtics could certainly use another shooter to spread the floor and keep opposing defenses from leeching on their big three.

4) Houston was a pretty decent analyst for ESPN. If nothing he likes is immediately available, Houston could return to the broadcast booth and wait for the right opportunity on-court or in the executive suite.

The Knicks practice facility in Greenburgh, NY is 12 miles from his Greenwich, CT home. The Nets practice facility in East Rutherford, NJ, is 25 miles farther along Route 287, then south into NJ. Practice facilities are where players "work". It’s their "office". It’s where they spend most of their time, from September to April, May or June. The Celtics practice facility in Waltham, Mass. is 175 miles away. Can’t get home to Terri and the kids at night. I think the Nets remain his best short term option unless it’s late in the season and it doesn’t matter much since he will only be away for a couple of months and the youngest child will be a little older.Or...He is worth more than $100 million. He invested wisely, didn’t spend his money on bling or tats or exotic dancers. He could just, you know, do nothing. .

i dont even get why he tried with the knicks again in the first place...sure, there was a lot of love n all of that..but man...the knicks are in shambles right now...almost every aspect of their entire organization... there was no chance that the knicks were going to even contend this year..you have the celtics, nets, bulls, heat, pistons, wiz, raptors, and itd be a toss-up between the magic/cavs/bucks/pacers...all of those last 4 teams are going to be fighting for those last few playoff spots...knicks are no where near anything, they might even end up being like the bobcats in their expansion year...(alrite, so all of taht was a bit of an exagerration, but houston is crazy for wanting to come bak to the knicks) houston probably could have made a comeback with the c’s just like the person below stated and actually win a ring .

Houston do we have a problem?

His wife just had a baby, so he wants to be close in the NY/NJ area, which really limits his options. Celtics would be his best bet, they’re simi close, they could use him, he has a shot to win his first ring and make the comeback worth it, and also he could probably stay healthy by not having to do as much and get wear and tear on his body. If we don’t see him jump on a team towards the beginning of the season, look for him to jump on a team after the deadline, when a playoff caliber team could use his presence, that also seems like a good option to me, but it’s just a thought .
