Kobe Bryant Won’t Address Future, Forces L.A. Lakers To Consider Trades

July 12 07

Steve Dilbeck comments on Bryant’s situation in L.A.:

First you couldn’t get Kobe Bryant to shut up. Now you can’t get him to say a word about his future.

This is called doing the right thing at the wrong time, which I suppose beats continuing to do the wrong thing. Although it’s close.

Just a simple clarification is all that’s asked:

Kobe, do you want to be traded or not?

Real basic like. Real simple.

Only Kobe wouldn’t go there Wednesday at a Nike function to announce the shoe and apparel company’s plans to build numerous playgrounds throughout Los Angeles.

"I just want to have a good time today," he said. "I’ve spoken so much on the issue already. I mean, for me to say anything else ... there’s not that much more for me to say.

"I’m just kind of moving on from it right now."

Let’s see, would that be moving on from the radio show on which he demanded to be traded or the one an hour later when he claimed his undying love to the franchise and desire to end his career a Laker?

Or would it be one of those where his ESPN peeps are relaying messages?

Since he did not zip it when he should have and continued in Byzantine radio rants more confusing than our exit strategy, Kobe now owes it to his many local fans to be clear about what it is he really wants.

But it was nothing doing Wednesday in his brief press conference. Kobe has closed it down at exactly the moment he needs to open up and be clear.

Just tell us so we understand, what is your current situation?

"If you want, you can call Mitch (Kupchak) up, call those guys up and talk to them about it," Kobe said. "I’m not going to beat a dead horse in the head anymore. Just because too much has been said already. I don’t want to get into it no more."

I followed him to the parking lot after the press conference because, you know, Kobe gives some of his best interviews to strangers with digital cameras.

Still, no clarification was coming.

My Quick Take: I agree with Dilbeck. Bryant owes it to his fans to clarify his future with the Lakers.

No press conferences or radio interviews are necessary. Kobe would only have to answer one question: in or out?

Dilbeck’s opinion, while fair, is unrealistic. Right now, Bryant and the Lakers are playing hi-stakes poker. It’s the final hand; all the marbles are in the pot. Here’s the problem: #24 doesn’t benefit from showing his cards.

Consider Bryant’s perspective. He wants a real sidekick-a legitimate Robin. His trade demand created a sense of urgency in Laker-land, forcing the club to chase superstars like Kevin Garnett.

If Bryant rescinds his trade demand, the Lakers’ front office hits the snooze button and goes back on vacation. After all, California is lovely this time of year.

Bryant can kiss The Big Ticket goodbye. He can forget about Jermaine O’Neal. And he’ll pass Steve Francis in the Staple Center halls when The Franchise signs with the Clippers.

Coming clean with his intentions is counterproductive to Bryant’s long-term interests. His trade demand, right or wrong, fair or not, forces the Lakers to upgrade his supporting cast.

Still, Dilbeck is right. In an ideal world, Bryant would address his future. However, Kobe-fans will forgive-and-forget if playing coy lands another superstar.

by the way i meant the actor must make you hate or love the caracter, not the person behind them. .

wait a minute...lets get one thing straight here... why is kobe bryant the best? because he puts on fancy moves so he can show off? thats like saying the best actor will make you cry all the time with his good drama. a great actor must make you cry, laugh, think. love him and hate him trough his caracters. it takes more than 81 points to be a good basketball player. assissts. steals blocks and so on. i mean im neutral here tho and i admit kobe is good. better than good. but what else does he want. he has the coach that is widely belived to be the best in the nba ever coaching him and so on. but if the only reason you say kobe is the best is because of the way he entertains you then i guess your right but jesus christs. the boy needs to mature. if people didnt kiss his a-------so damn much, he wouldnt be acting like this. i mean does duncan go around beaatin his chest like king kong or something when he makes a basket or something? was Robinson considered inferior as a center because of duncans talent? is steve nash a bad player because amare stoudemire does his job? is shaquile any less of a player because dwade does his job and shaq didnt win the mvp this time? lets face it in ameriaca as a basketball player getin ur own clothing line and shoes might be representatvie of ur fame and the amount of kids or ppl u reach out to but thats just it. now kobe is alone no doubt about it but he gets the ball even when he’s not supposed to. you dont have to be a kobe hater to see that. even parents that love their kids can admit their flaws or mistakes. lets accept the truth and leave the fanatism to the side please, other wise lets talk about politics and religion then...you might as well credit rap music to just one person too .

i am not a lakers fan. but i am a kobe fan. when i watch him go to work, and he is on fire, man impossible is nothing. he can be double or triple teamed and still score. no shot is too hard. he is one of the best in the game today. but as they say "it takes 5 baby" KB24 cant do it all. forget all the talk and rumors. thats exactly what it is - rumors and talk. kobe know just as we all do, he is not getting ring number 4 without shaq. he is faithful to the lakers as allen I to the sixers. but he needs change as allen did. only time will tell..... .

i think that everythings been up to kobe allof these years and he ’s been the superstar ever since shaq left so he should feel very PROUD of himself so i think that it’s bull s---how they’re tring to get rid of him when he’s been that teams leader and without him they wouldn’t have made it to the playoffs in the 1st place !!!!!! He’s my hero and I’ll always be there 4 him because without him i would not have made it to basketball either it don’t matter if he gets traded i’ll just switch teams because that’s what a true KOBE BRYANT FAN would do !!!!!Go KOBE YOURTHE BEST AND YOU’LL ALWAYS BE MY MYP!!!!!!!!!!! .

The free-agency period is well into it, the season’s been over for a couple months for the Lakers, KG & J.O. are on the trading block, Stevie Franchise is a free agent, teams are signing players left and right and STILL nothing done by Kupcake!!!! This is getting pathetic, the it’s like going to a dance and standing around while all the pretty girls are asked to dance, all thats left are the homely ones. The Lakers are looking for a PG and Francis is available so WHY IN THE HELL haven’t we heard anything about them offering him a contract? I LOVE D-Fish, he’s a great human being and would be a fine mentor to Farmar & Crittendon, plus he’s buds with Kobe and knows the triangle BUT he’s not Steve Francis! Go with the high-risk/high-reward player in Francis who was a top-3 PG a couple seasons ago in Houston and is 2 1/2 years younger. PLEASE KUPCAKE DO THE RIGHT THING!!!!! .

THE LAKERS ORGANIZTION IS POSSIBLY THE GREATEST THERE IS. KOBE IS JUST A CRYBABY BECAUSE HE HATES TO LOSE. HONESTLY I THINK IT IS BEST THAT THE LAKERS FINALLY LET GO OF KOBE BRYANT (EVEN IF THEY DONT RECIEVE AN EQUAL TRADE) AND MOVE ON TO DEVELOP A TEAM SIMILAR TO THE SUNS WHO CAN WIN SEVERAL FUTURE CHAMPIONSHIPS IN THE LONG RUN AND NOT ONE WITH A SUPERSTAR. .

Well KOBE 4 Life, For you to say shaq doesnt average good numbers since he left is a complement! Any center at his age would love to have his numbers. OK you are a Kobe fan-thats cool, But I am A laker Fan,since I was five, I’ll give you the lakers screwed Kobe,If you give me Kobe screwed Kobe also, But honestly Lamar Odam is not a bad side kick(16points,about 10 rebounds,). And no he didnt say get rid of shaq-he didnt say sh*t. Any other player in thier right mind would have said F*&ck that keep him we will be fine-and win at least one more but nope he took the Penny Hardaway route. Not saying in noway that Kobe is penny-but a simular situation. And Im not putting all the blame on Kobe,But he pulled a girl move-so I dont care for him at this point in time .

Kobe mature???? Please the mature thing to do, would have been to not flip flop on your position within a couple of hours. I’m also not saying that Kobe ever said it was me or him, but he never spoke to try and keep Shaq. And to say Shaq didn’t win that title with Dwayne Wade is completely bogus. With out Shaq Wade gets double and triple teamed all series. I really don’t care what Kobe does, because wherever he goes they will have to clean out the franchise to pay his salary. If he really wanted to win that bad why didn’t he re-structure his deal like Tom Brady did. .

HOW CAN YOU BE MAD AT KOBE? THAT FRANCHISE HAS SCREWED HIM OVER FROM THE DAY SHAQ LEFT. THEY NEVER CAME TO KOBES AID WHEN THE PRESS KEPT HARPING ON HIM FOR SAYIN HIM OR ME, WHEN IT WAS BUSS WHO MADE THE CHOICE. IF YOU READ PHILS BOOK HE EVEN SAYS IN THERE THAT BUSS AND KUPCHECK SAID THAT THEY WHERE GONNA BE SCALING BACK, THATS WHAT THEY TOLD PHIL. BUT THEY TOLD KOBE IT WAS FOOT ON THE THROTTLE,I AM 100000% BEHIND KOBE, HE HAS DONE EVERYTHING HE CAN TO TRY AND GET THIS TEAM TO WIN, BUT WHEN YOU ARE PLAYING WITH A BUNCH OF GUYS WHO QUIT ON YOU HALF WAY THROUGH THE SEASON, SO THEN YOU HAVE TO DRAG THERE a------- TO THE PLAYOFFS, ONLY TO HAVE YOUR a-------HANDED TO YOU BY A TEAM YOU ALMOST BEAT THE YEAR BEFORE, YOU TEND TO FLIP OUT. I HOPE KOBE GOES TO A BETTER TEAM HE DESERVES IT, I WOULD LOVE HIM TO STAY IN LAKER LAND, BUT I CAN SEE WHY HE DOESNT TRUST THEM ANYMORE, ITS LIKE HAVING A GIRLFRIEND THAT CHEATS ON YOU, THERE IS NO TRUST AND IT IS A BAD RELATIONSHIP. I THINK THAT THE LAKERS THOUGHT THEY HAD EVERYONE FOOLED, I AM GLAD KOBE SPOKE UP, CAUSE THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON TOO LONG, STOP BLAMING KOBE FOR SHAQ, NOT TO MENTION, WHAT HAS SHAQ AVERAGED SINCE THE TRADE? DWAYNE WON THAT TITLE JUST FOR YOUR INFO. 35 A GAME SO DONT SAY SHIT. KOBE IS IN THE PRIME OF HIS CAREER, THESE ARE HIS YEARS OF GREATNESS, HE IS MATURED FULLY AND AT HIS PEAK PERFOMANCE WISE, HE NEEDS TO BE PUT IN A POSITIION NOW TO LEAD A TEAM TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP. AND DONT GIVE ME THIS LEBRON LED HIS TEAM TO THE FINALS WITH THE SAME TEAM KOBE HAS, WHICH IS ABSOLUTE BULLSHIT. MY HIGHSCHOOL BASKETBALL TEAM COULD HAVE MADE IT TO THE FINALS IN THE EAST THIS YEAR. PUT THE LAKERS IN THE EAST THIS YEAR THEY WOULD WIN 55 GAMES AND GO TO THE FINALS. .

I like his game but peace out dude you have done enough-thanx for all the scoring-all the great moves-and help winning three titles, thanx for showing your true colors to the world. I dont mind the lakers rebuilding-without you, even if kobe chose to stay I still will look at him differently, every one wants to win but only one team can,you will have ups and downs. when San Antonio finally starts to go down they will take three to five years to rebuild-its not just the lakers. I know you dont want to end up like KG-but there is more than one way to do things and you did it the WRONG way. I AM A LAKER FAN-so who ever wants to represent them I will rise with you, through the ups and downs-Thats a true fan-If you are really a fan Kobe-like you say you are .
