Ainge receives contract extension

05.20.2005

Boston, MA (Basketball News) - Boston Celtics executive director of basketball operations Danny Ainge received a three-year contract extension on Friday. The deal will keep him with the club through the 2008-09 campaign.

The 46-year-old Ainge took over his current position on May 9, 2003. This past season, Boston captured the Atlantic Division title and the third seed in the Eastern Conference. The Celtics were then eliminated from the postseason in the first round by the Indiana Pacers.

Ainge played for the Celtics from 1981-89 and helped lead the team to championships in 1984 and 1986. He finished his career with Boston averaging 11.3 points and 4.4 assists per game, while hitting 38.6 percent of his three- point shots.

Ainge was then traded along with Brad Lohaus to Sacramento on February 23, 1989 in exchange for Ed Pinckney and Joe Kleine. Following the 1989-90 season, he was dealt to the Portland Trail Blazers.

In July 1992, Ainge signed with the Phoenix Suns as a free agent and spent three campaigns with the club before retiring.

Following his playing days, he served as a color analyst for TNT during the 1995-96 season before joining the Suns as an assistant coach prior to the 1996-97 campaign. After the team started 0-8 that year, Ainge was promoted to head coach and guided the club to a 40-34 record over the remainder of the season.

He spent the next two-plus campaigns at the helm of the Suns and compiled a 136-90 record before stepping down on December 13, 1999 and returning to TNT as an analyst.
