Atlanta visits the Heat

02.20.2004

Miami, FL (Basketball News) - The Miami Heat go for their third straight win tonight as they welcome the lowly Atlanta Hawks to AmericanAirlines Arena.

This is the third meeting of the season between the two clubs, as each squad has picked up a victory on its homecourt.

The Hawks made some big news at Thursday’s trade deadline, as they traded forward Rasheed Wallace to the Detroit Pistons as part of a three-team deal that also included the Boston Celtics. In addition to Wallace, Detroit also received guard Mike James from the Celtics. Meanwhile, Atlanta acquired forward Chris Mills from Boston and center Zeljko Rebraca and guard Bob Sura from Detroit. Also, the Hawks will obtain the rights to Milwaukee’s 2004 first-round draft choice, which Detroit previously acquired from Denver.

The Celtics received guards Chucky Atkins and Lindsey Hunter, both of whom were with the Pistons, Detroit’s 2004 first-round selection and cash considerations.

Wallace’s stay in Atlanta was brief. He played just one game for the Hawks, scoring 20 points and grabbing six rebounds in a loss to New Jersey on Wednesday. The 29-year-old Wallace was dealt to Atlanta along with Wesley Person by Portland for forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim, center Theo Ratliff and guard Dan Dickau on February 9.

The Hawks are 2-9 in Friday games this season. Atlanta is 0-16 when it allows at least 100 points.

Atlanta, which has lost five of its last seven as the visitor, is 7-20 on the road this season.

The Heat, who did not make a move on Thursday, registered an impressive 97-85 win over the Utah Jazz at AmericanAirlines Arena on Tuesday night. Rookie guard Dwyane Wade poured in 31 points to pace the Heat to the big victory. Wade joined Sherman Douglas (1989-90) as the only Heat rookies to score at least 30 points in a game three times.

Rasual Butler chipped in a season-high 15 and Rafer Alston contributed 13 points in the win for the Heat, who have won two straight games following a five-game losing streak.

Miami defeated the Jazz for the first time since November 10, 2000. The Heat also snapped their three-game skid at home.

The Heat are 15-10 at home this season.

Atlanta has lost four straight and 13 of its last 14 at Miami.
