West Lafayette, IN (Basketball News) - Kenneth Lowe scored a game-high 13 points to lead Purdue to a 53-51 victory over 19th-ranked Wisconsin in a Big Ten battle at Mackey Arena.
Boilermaker head coach Gene Keady earned his 500th win in his 24th season at Purdue. Keady, whose overall mark is 539-258 in 26 seasons, joined former Indiana coach Bobby Knight as the only coaches in the history of the Big Ten Conference to win 500 games at one school.
David Teague was Purdue’s other double-figure scorer with 11, as the Boilermakers (12-4, 2-1 Big Ten) won their second straight and extended their home winning streak to 29 games versus the Badgers. The last time Wisconsin earned a victory in West Lafayette came back in 1971-72 season.
Mike Wilkinson and Devin Harris each scored 12 points for Wisconsin (11-3, 2-1 Big Ten), which had its three-game winning streak snapped.
Purdue built a 39-28 lead with 12:46 remaining in the game, but the Badgers outscored the Boilermakers 18-9 in a nine-minute span to cut the deficit to 48-46.
Both teams would trade free throws in the final 90 seconds, as Austin Parkinson made one of two with four seconds left for a 53-51 edge.
Wisconsin had a chance to pull out the win at the buzzer, but Harris’ 19-foot three-point attempt at the top of the key came up short.
Teague scored the Boilermakers’ first eight points of the game, as Purdue held a 10-7 advantage midway through the first half.
The lead never grew larger than four for either side, as the first 20 minutes featured eight lead changes.
Matt Kiefer’s 15-foot jumper from the baseline kick-started Purdue’s 7-2 run in the final 3:05 of the first half, giving the Boilermakers a slim 24-20 edge at the intermission.
