Cavs decline option on Wagner

10.29.2004

Cleveland, OH (Basketball News) - Cleveland guard Dajuan Wagner will become a free agent following this season after the Cavaliers declined the team’s $3.4 million contract option for the 2005-06 campaign.

Wagner, who has battled through various injuries in his short career, could still be re-signed by Cleveland if he has a strong 2004-05 year.

The two-year pro out of Memphis played in only 44 games last season after undergoing knee surgery. He also appeared in just 47 games as a rookie, but still scored 13.4 points per game.

Wagner netted 6.5 points per game last year while playing alongside rookie phenom LeBron James and has totaled 10.1 points a contest for his career.

The 21-year old, who was the sixth overall pick in the 2002 draft, sprained his ankle during the preseason and could begin the year on the injured list.

Cleveland, which barely missed out on the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs last year , begins its regular-season schedule on Wednesday, November 3 against Indiana.
