Celtics name Rivers head coach

04.29.2004

Boston, MA (Basketball News) - The Boston Celtics have named Glenn "Doc" Rivers head coach. The club has scheduled a 3:30 p.m. (et) press conference to make the announcement.

Rivers was fired by the Orlando Magic this past season after starting 1-10. The 1999-2000 NBA Coach of the Year replaces interim coach John Carroll, who was fired after the Celtics were swept out of the first round of the playoffs by the Indiana Pacers.

Rivers had been the Orlando coach since June 7, 1999 and produced a 171-168 record. In his tenure, the Magic made the playoffs three times.

Carroll took over for the final 36 games of the season after head coach Jim O’Brien resigned due to differences with Danny Ainge, the team’s director of basketball operations.

The 48-year-old Carroll finished with a 14-22 record, guiding Boston into the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
