The Celtics said Szczerbiak is expected to begin rehab immediately and he will likely be ready for training camp in October.
Szczerbiak had been playing through the injury since early February and an MRI exam last week revealed the nature of the problem.
The 6-foot-7 Szczerbiak was acquired by Boston in late January from Minnesota along with Michael Olowokandi, center Dwayne Jones and a future first round draft choice. The Timberwolves received guards Ricky Davis and Marcus Banks, center Mark Blount, forward Justin Reed and two conditional second round draft choices in return.
In 72 games this season with both Boston and Minnesota, Szczerbiak averaged 19.0 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. The Miami-Ohio product played in 32 games with the Celtics after the trade and averaged 17.5 points per game.
