What Will it Take for Amare Stoudemire to Be the MVP?

  By Jason Kelly

What will it take for Amare Stoudemire to be the MVP? Short answer: It’s going to take a line of 25 points, 10 rebounds, 2 blocks, 2 assists and 1 steal a game.

He has been politicking for MVP votes, but everyone knows he is still too one-dimensional. He’s 6 foot 10 freakin’ inches tall and he cannot grab ten rebounds a game? That’s his major problem. He does not fully commit himself and everyone knows it. He’s the Randy Moss of the NBA.

Remember when your gym teacher told you that he expects more out of those that have more athletic ability? Remember that uncoordinated guy that got an “A” in gym class because he tried really hard but still couldn’t hit a free throw? Yeah, that’s right, Amare doesn’t get the votes because he’s just that lazy.

I hate to use the word “lazy” because he has always been able to improve his game. He’s added a jumper and is shooting about 58%. He’s a good help defender and is getting lost on defense less and less. He’s even better at boxing out smaller forwards now that Shaquille O’Neal is boxing out the centers.

But … he still needs to do more. He needs to raise his game. The public expects more out of him. He’ll never be an MVP until he delivers on his potential.

When Shaq came to town, he said he was in Phoenix to spearhead “The Amare Stoudemire Project” – meaning that he was going to make Amare the best power forward in the game. What he needs to do is to teach Stoudemire how to fight for a rebound. That is what Shaq can add to STAT’s game.

It’s not going to come from a few more points. A couple of nights back against Portland, with less than a minute in the game and the win secured Stoudemire argued an out-of-bounds call so that the Suns could get the ball back. As soon as he got the ball, he shot it to pad his stats. I’d vote against him just for that.

On the other hand, Shaq is showing Stoudemire that the MVP needs to bring energy to the game. Gratuitously flying into the stands helps sometimes. Being the “energy guy” on the team helps, too. Some Suns’ fans think that Shaq is pulling down Shawn Marion-like numbers. I beg to differ in that Matrix never had a five-assist line as Shaq is prone to do.

But I digress. What should Stoudemire do to get that MVP? Stop acting like it’s owed to you. Kind of like the way you need to stop whining when you commit stupid fouls. Suck it up and keep playing. Be more like Rocky than Apollo.

Just in case anyone has any other ideas, I’ve been saying for almost two years now that the Suns’ championship chances rest on Amare’s broad shoulders. I’m a huge fan of his ... especially considering the things he’s done FOR his family and the things they’ve done TO him. About a year ago, I was saying he’s the future of the franchise and the Suns’ only chance for sustained success was running the offense through Amare. That said, I’m still disappointed because I know he can do more. Anyone who thinks I was hating on Amare didn’t read the whole article. .

Good article...I agree. Stat is one of the best PF in the game and a beast on the offensive end and a good weak side defender (that’s where he gets the majority of his blocks). I watch a lot of Suns games and if he put half the energy on defense (man to man and hustle on boards) as he does on offense, his claims that he should get votes would be justifiable. Although talking to the press about why you should get votes is not really what an MVP does. He’ll learn and he will get an MVP by the end of his awesome career. .

it may be true that STAT is not ready to get da mvp just yet, and even though deisel is not as good as he was before, he will make amare 10 times better, and then lean back and watch amare get da MVP. and besides, he didnt play ball until he was 14-so this is somethin\\\’ already .

I totally agree on the part that Amare COULD do better in the rebounding category. He’s a big guy, and it’s no excuse to stand there and wait for the ball to come to him while Shaq battles 3 guys for the rebound. However...you haven’t really talked about any of the GOOD things Amare has brought to the table as of late...his blocks per game and points per game have soared. He’s one of the best finishers in the game, although so many deny it. Plus...there’s no way on EARTH Dwight Howard is a better player than he is...Dwight Howard isn’t HALF the player Amare is. Do you see Dwight Howard pulling up for a 15-foot jumper and netting it around 50% of the time? Do you EVER see Dwight Howard back down his man, then hit a turn around fade-away J? Do you see Dwight Howard shooting about 80% from the line? No way Jose. So for everyone else who’s putting Dwight ahead of Amare better reconsider. .
