Los Angeles, CA (Basketball News) - Desmon Farmer scored a career-high 40 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead Southern California to a 99-90 win over seventh-ranked Arizona in the Pac-10 Conference at the Los Angeles Sports Arena.
Farmer converted 11-of-19 shots from the field, including seven three- pointers. He also hit 11-of-12 from the foul line for the Trojans (8-6, 3-2 Pac-10), who won for the third time in four games and snapped a three-game losing streak in the series. Errick Craven contributed 16 points.
Channing Frye scored 17 points, while Mustafa Shakur and Salim Stoudamire each contributed 14 points for the Wildcats (10-3, 2-2), who suffered their second straight loss. Their head coach, Lute Olson, remains tied with Fred A. Enke for most victories (509) in school history.
After a tightly contested opening 10 minutes, the Trojans used a 9-1 run to extend a 31-29 advantage
Gregg Guenther Jr. scored four of the points, and a basket by Rodrick Stewart put them ahead 40-30 with 4:07 remaining in the first half.
USC maintained a 48-39 lead with 1:17 left in the half, but the Wildcats scored four points in the final 35 seconds.
Andre Iguodala hit two foul shots and Chris Rodgers delivered a layup to get Arizona within 48-43 at halftime.
Farmer led the Trojans with 23 points on 7-of-13 shooting, including five three-pointers, in the first half.
Less than four minutes into the second half, the Wildcats pulled within 54-53 on consecutive baskets by Frye and Hassan Adams.
Two foul shots by Ivan Radenovic with 13:21 left in the game cut Arizona’s deficit to 58-57.
But USC responded with a 25-14 run to take control. Farmer highlighted the decisive flurry with 12 points, including two three-pointers. Stewart’s jumper, with 5:08 to go, put the team ahead 83-71.
Arizona cut its deficit to 93-86 on three foul shots by Rodgers with 44 seconds remaining, but got no closer.
