NBA Game Summary - Memphis at Sacramento

02.8.2006

Sacramento, CA (Basketball News) - Brad Miller hit two three pointers in the final 62 seconds to boost the Sacramento Kings to a 104-96 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies at ARCO Arena.

Miller, who had missed the last three games with a fractured right thumb, ended with 22 points and 10 rebounds. He nearly fouled out with 3:16 remaining, but referee Violet Palmer overruled Gary Zielinski and handed Miller a technical foul for elbowing Brian Cardinal following a rebound. That left Miller with five personals.

Kevin Martin had 22 points and Ron Artest scored 18 for Sacramento. Mike Bibby ended with 14 points and 10 assists for the Kings, who have won two straight overall and six in a row at home. Kenny Thomas had 15 points and nine rebounds.

"I got into a groove in the fourth," Miller said. "My recruit (Cardinal at Purdue) kept slapping my thumb. It kind of brings out a different aspect of me. Obviously the (referees) have never watched Purdue basketball with Cardinal. He is the best flopper, and Shane Battier as well."

Bobby Jackson, making his return to Sacramento for the first time since being traded in the offseason, had 24 points. Pau Gasol ended with 15 points, nine rebounds and six assists, but the Grizzlies lost for the 15th straight time at Sacramento and fell to 1-20 as the visitor against the Kings. The last time the Grizzlies beat the Kings on the road was on April 19, 1998.

"It was great to come back, but I would rather get the win; that’s just the competitor in me," Jackson said. "We battled back, but we need to find a way to get this thing turned around."

Hakim Warrick and Chucky Atkins had 13 points apiece for Memphis, which lost for the third consecutive time and for the 10th time in 13 games.

Miller was called for his technical with 3:16 left and his two free throws left the Kings with a 92-90 lead.

Jackson, who played five seasons with the Kings, drilled a three-pointer from the right side for a 93-92 Memphis edge with 2:56 left.

However, Miller hit two consecutive jumpers before Gasol hit three from the foul line over a 17-second span to tie the game at 96.

Miller then drilled a three from the right wing. Following a Memphis turnover on a bad pass from Cardinal, Miller drained a shot from the left side for a 102-96 Sacramento lead with 33.8 seconds left.

Bibby hit two free throws with 14.3 seconds remaining.

The Kings bolted to a 34-23 lead after one quarter before the Grizzlies got within 55-49 at the half. Sacramento was on top, 74-66, going into the fourth following a three from Bibby in the closing seconds of the third.

Entering this game, Memphis’ Mike Miller had scored double digits in 24 straight games, but with Artest’s defense, he was limited to three on 1-of-7 shooting.

The Kings shot 56.7 percent from the field...Memphis was 9-of-27 on three- point tries...Francisco Garcia had 11 points for Sacramento...Eddie Jones scored 11 for Memphis...The Kings have beaten the Grizzlies in 13 of the last 16 meetings...This marked the first Kings opponent in the last 14 contests to tally 100 points...Battier had 10 rebounds.
