Seattle, WA (Basketball News) - Ray Allen scored 19 points and Damien Wilkins added 17 as Seattle edged Portland, 89-87, at Key Arena.
Nick Collison finished with 14 points and eight rebounds for the SuperSonics, who won their third straight game. Reggie Evans pulled down 13 rebounds in the win.
"It’s a great comfort to work hard off the screens and see (Damien) Wilkins hitting shots," Allen said. "Portland is a scrappy team that plays hard and they stay around."
Shareef Abdur-Rahim led all scorers with 21 points and Sebastian Telfair netted 18 points for the Trail Blazers, who have lost three straight and 10 of their last 11 games. Darius Miles had 13 points, while Joel Przybilla grabbed 13 rebounds in the loss.
Trailing 50-46, Seattle opened the third stanza with a 13-1 surge, keyed by seven points from Wilkins. Allen added a pair of trey’s in the flurry to help give the SuperSonics a 59-51 lead.
Seattle continued to lead throughout the frame as the Trail Blazers got as close as 63-61 after a pair of free throws by Abdur-Rahim with 1:40 left in the stanza.
The Sonics led 70-65 after three quarters.
Ronald Murray and Collison quickly put the Sonics up nine in the opening moments of the fourth. They continued to lead by eight until Portland went on an 11-2 run to grab the lead.
Richie Frahm ignited the surge with his trey, while Abdur-Rahim netted the final six points of the flurry to make it an 83-82 contest with just over two minutes left.
The teams then traded buckets over the next minute before Allen put the Sonics up, knocking down a three-pointer with 1:22 to play.
Abdur-Rahim cut it to 88-87 after hitting a pair from the free throw line with 29.9 seconds left.
On the ensuing Sonics possession, Antonio Daniels drove the lane and appeared to have a wide-open layup, but was fouled hard with 14.3 seconds on the clock. Daniels hit 1-of-2 from the line, giving Seattle an 89-87 lead.
Portland had a chance to tie on its next opportunity as Miles triggered the inbounds pass to Abdur-Rahim, who dribbled around trying to find an open shot. Abdur-Rahim, who was tightly guarded by Collison, got away a jumper but it hit the front iron and the rebound fell to Collison to secure the Sonics win.
"We haven’t been able to blow many teams out," Collison said. "The way we have played in the fourth quarter recently has helped us win games."
The Trail Blazers led 28-26 after the first 12 minutes and took a 50-46 lead into halftime.
