Portland chose Telfair with the 13th overall pick, the first of three first-round choices by the Trail Blazers in this year’s draft. The 19-year old averaged 33.2 points, 9.2 assists and 3.7 rebounds as a senior for New York City’s Lincoln High School and ended a stellar scholastic career as the city’s all-time leading scorer, surpassing NBA veteran Kenny Anderson.
The six-foot Telfair also led Lincoln to three consecutive New York City championships and was named a McDonald’s and Parade Magazine All-American in 2004.
Portland also selected Russians Viktor Khryapa and Sergei Monya with the 22nd and 23rd choices, respectively.
