Blazers sign top pick Telfair

07.12.2004

Portland, OR (Basketball News) - The Portland Trail Blazers Monday announced the signing of point guard Sebastian Telfair, the team’s first selection in the 2004 NBA draft. Per club policy, terms were not disclosed.

Portland chose Telfair with the 13th overall pick, the first of three first-round choices by the Trail Blazers in this year’s draft. The 19-year old averaged 33.2 points, 9.2 assists and 3.7 rebounds as a senior for New York City’s Lincoln High School and ended a stellar scholastic career as the city’s all-time leading scorer, surpassing NBA veteran Kenny Anderson.

The six-foot Telfair also led Lincoln to three consecutive New York City championships and was named a McDonald’s and Parade Magazine All-American in 2004.

Portland also selected Russians Viktor Khryapa and Sergei Monya with the 22nd and 23rd choices, respectively.
