Calipari gets extension from Memphis

03.26.2007

Memphis, TN (Basketball News) - University of Memphis rewarded men’s head basketball coach John Calipari with a contract extension Monday, agreeing in principle to a deal that will keep him with the school through the 2011-12 season.

Memphis went 33-4 this past season, advancing to the final of the South Region, where the Tigers lost to Ohio State. The Tigers are 181-63 in seven seasons under Calipari, winning the last two Conference-USA regular-season and tournament titles as well as advancing within one game of the Final Four each year.

"I am pleased to announce that I have met with John and the two of us have reached an agreement that will keep him on as the Tigers’ basketball coach for years to come," Memphis athletics director R.C. Johnson stated on Monday. "This is my way to say thank you to John for what he has been able to accomplish at the University of Memphis over the past seven years.

"There are not many teams in college basketball that have won 66 games over a two-year span or have gone through an entire conference season undefeated," Johnson continued. "John continues to keep the national sports spotlight aimed on the University and the City of Memphis and for all of the right reasons. He and his staff are seeing to it that their student-athletes are graduating and succeeding on the basketball court as well."

In his 15 years as a collegiate coach, Calipari has amassed an overall record of 374-134.

"The University has shown a continued commitment to the Tiger basketball program in academics and facilities, as well as in numerous other areas," Calipari said. "I have repeatedly stated that as long as that commitment remains strong, I will be the head coach at the University of Memphis."

"We have had a tremendous seven years, especially the incredible ride during the past two seasons, and I look forward to continuing that success in the coming years."

Calipari was rumored to be a possible candidate to replace Tubby Smith at Kentucky.
