Rose, who has one more year left on his contract for a reported $16.9 million, appeared in 46 games this season with Toronto, averaging 12.1 points and 2.8 rebounds.
"Jalen is exactly what we need here," said Knicks head coach Larry Brown, who coached Rose in Indiana. "The kids can benefit from his backcourt play. I know what he can do. I think it’s a no-brainer that he can help."
In his 12th NBA season, Rose has averaged 14.7 points, 3.6 rebounds and 4.0 assists for the Raptors, Denver Nuggets, Indiana and Chicago Bulls.
Davis has played in just 36 games this season, averaging 5.0 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. He has appeared in just one game since returning from his five-game league imposed suspension for going into the crowd in Chicago to aid his wife who was involved in an altercation with a fan.
Davis, who played for the Raptors for four-plus seasons starting in 1999, is in his 13th NBA season. He has averaged 10.1 points and 7.5 rebounds per contest while also playing for the Pacers and Bulls.
Davis’ current contract expires at the end of this season.
"As part of our strategic plan, one of the top priorities to move this franchise forward has to be to get under the salary cap," said Toronto interim general manager Wayne Embry. "I’ve never seen a team rebuild itself without starting from that point. This trade presents the opportunity for us to acquire $10 million in cap room."
The draft pick New York receives belonged to Denver. Toronto acquired it in an earlier trade that sent Vince Carter out of town.
Ironically, the Knicks and Raptors played each other on Friday night with Toronto coming away with a 104-90 decision. Rose and Davis were on the inactive list and not available to play. Rose, though, was on the Knicks’ bench.
