Mavs embark on important road trip

03.24.2006

(Basketball News) - The Dallas Mavericks (53-16) trail the defending world champion San Antonio Spurs by one-half game for first place in the Southwest Division and the top spot in the Western Conference.

Dallas visits the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday at Philips Arena. It is the second and final meeting of the campaign between the squads. On November 17th, Josh Howard scored a game-high 25 points and Dirk Nowitzki added 20 points and 13 rebounds to lead Dallas over Atlanta, 87-78, at American Airlines Arena.

Dallas has lost two straight after winning its last four at Atlanta.

The Mavericks attempt to bounce back from a tough loss against the Hawks. On Thursday, Jason Richardson scored 40 points, including a dramatic buzzer- beating three-pointer to win the game for the Golden State Warriors, who knocked off Dallas 122-121, at American Airlines Center.

All-Star Dirk Nowitzki scored a game-high 51 points, two short of his career- high, and pulled down nine boards, while Jason Terry contributed 29 points and seven assists in the loss to Golden State for the Mavericks.

Dallas is a solid 23-10 as the visitor this season. The Mavericks will also visit Detroit, Cleveland and Orlando on the swing. They are 6-4 in their last 10 contests away from home.

Nowitzki, who leads the Mavericks in scoring (26.3 ppg) and rebounding (8.8 rpg), has scored over 20 points in 16 straight games. He is averaging 31.7 points and 10.0 rebounds in his last 10 outings.

The Mavericks have allowed 100 or more points in two of their last 10 contests. Dallas was on the losing end of both contests when its opponent reached the century mark.
