Mavs extend contract of Johnson

10.12.2006

Dallas, TX (Basketball News) - The Dallas Mavericks have extended the contract of head coach Avery Johnson on Thursday. It’s a reported five-year extension, which will average at least $4 million per season.

The Dallas Morning News reported that the extension will replace Johnson’s current deal that paid him $2.5 million in 2005-06, his first full campaign leading the Mavericks.

"I’m thrilled that Avery will be coaching the Mavs for years to come," Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said. "He is a great partner and person that makes us a better organization. Plus, he is a great coach too. I couldn’t be happier for Avery and his family."

Cuban and Johnson began talking about a new contract after losing to Miami in the 2006 NBA Finals. The new deal keeps Johnson in the Lone Star State through the 2010-2011 season.

Johnson took over for Don Nelson with 18 games remaining in the 2004-2005 season and the team finished 16-2. The Mavericks reached the second round of the playoffs that year before falling to Phoenix.

"The Little General", who guided the Mavs to a franchise-best 60-22 record and their first NBA Finals appearance last season, is the fastest coach to reach the 50-win plateau (62 games).
