Nash injures back in practice

01.19.2005

Phoenix, AZ (Basketball News) - Phoenix Suns starting point guard Steve Nash was expected to be back in the lineup for Wednesday’s home game against Memphis after missing two contests with a deep thigh bruise.

However, his return may be delayed after he suffered a back injury during practice on Tuesday at America West Arena. After getting tangled up with backup point guard Leandro Barbosa, the 30-year-old Nash experienced severe back spasms and received an hour of treatment.

He will undergo further evaluation to determine the extent of the injury and is listed as a game-time decision for the contest against the Grizzlies. In 37 games this season, Nash is averaging 15.3 points and a league-high 10.9 assists per contest.

Meanwhile, Barbosa left the arena on crutches, as he suffered a left ankle sprain after stepping on Nash’s foot near the end of the practice session. Barbosa was placed on the injured list Wednesday. He is averaging 5.6 points over 30 contests this season.

In other news, the club signed guard Smush Parker to a 10-day contract.

The Suns (31-8) are back home after suffering through an 0-4 road trip.
