A big mistake: L.A. Lakers must avoid Kwame Brown sequel

July 24 08

Right now, my friend is in the bathroom releasing his lunch in the toilet. His ailment is simple: he heard Kwame Brown, the human curse, might re-sign with his beloved Los Angeles Lakers.

Eight months after getting exiled to Memphis in the Pau Gasol trade, reports indicate the post could re-sign with the purple-and-gold as a free agent.

Simply put, Brown wrecks careers. Drafting the seven-footer first overall in 2001 destroyed Michael Jordan’s reputation as an executive, while Mitch Kupchak only recently recovered from trading Caron Butler for Brown.

Why would L.A. want him back? Coach Phil Jackson still likes Brown’s athleticism, size, and body. Always has. And Zen-Master believes he could eventually become a defensive force, a poor man’s Horace Grant minus the money goggles.

Jackson is right. Brown hasn’t lost his physical gifts, but he never developed them either. He remains that raw high school senior without polish to his game.

Only now -seven years later- he has issues. There was a DUI case, dropped sexual assault charges, and a bizarre cake-tossing incident outside a nightclub.

On-court, Brown often looks unconfident and unsure of his role. For example, he admitted the Staples Center boos altered his confidence on the offensive end. Problem is, Brown isn’t a scorer. And he shouldn’t care about shooting. He should instead watch videos of Ben Wallace in Detroit and get points via hustle plays, tip-ins, and put-backs. Nothing more.

The Lakers have a hole with Ronny Turiaf’s departure. But Brown isn’t the answer and my friend’s stomach couldn’t handle a Kwame sequel.

Brown is a waste of human life. Now he is coming to my Pistons. I don’t know if I can root for the Pistons anymore. Joe Dumars was supposed to be more intelligent than that. This is a Matt Millen move. Give me that money. I could do so much better than sit on my a-------all day long like Brown. .

5 reasons this could work out for LA:
#1 - Does anyone remember how soft BOS made them look in the Finals? Phil Jackson admitted himself that Derek Fischer is the LAK enforcer; 48 yr-old, 6-ft, 100-something pounds, Derek Fischer.
#2 - As long as Gasol is too cultured to bang in the post, the Lakers will continue to be weak in the post on defense. Both Pierce & KG did what they wanted to in the paint.
#3 - Believe it or not, Turiaf’s numbers were on par with Kwame’s. Kwame’s game is uglier than Turiaf’s, but his production isn’t.
#4 - LAK’s current collection of forwards leaves probably 8-12 minutes of playing time, assuming Odom stays and Bynum plays. Even Kwame can muster that.
#5 - Kwame’s cheap. There may not be a bigger, cheaper, body available to pay 4 or 5 with some grit.

Bottom line for LAK mgmt is there really isn’t much risk in swapping Turiaf for Kwame on the floor. Fans will hate it because what it seems like, not what it is. .

c-mon... kwame is garbage. his defense is not even close to ben wallace’s at his prime... NOT EVEN CLOSE. he sucks. y would anyone except for a scrub team want him? id rather take my chances on a F.A. or a D-Leaguer. jeez. kwame has shown the league for 8 yrs that he sucks and now hes gonna finally blossom? btw GoLakers, the kings are not retarted. They know how to trade for talent unlike the grizz that trade for cap room. Artest will NEVER get traded for kwame (i know caron got traded for him but artest is a proven player caron at that time wasnt)... and mitch traded caron lol so at the end of it all, kwame shouldnt even be in the league. .

why not, like it has been said. Get him for cheap, 1yr, he knows the system, get out and block. I really have a soft spot for the guy. the whole #1 draft has been heavy on him. one more chance, then you can say shame on us if he doesn’t change. Think about it... we pay luke and vlad how much for how long and mihm? they dont live up to their contracts either... one more chance...if not, then we can sign him and then trade him for Artest. You never know... he’s the magic trade chip. .

This is a hard question. Kwame SUCKS we all know that. But Kwame does have a big body and he has played good D against other bigs. It would make sense to bring him back but only for a league minimum. He doesnt deserve major money. As a fan I say "NO!" to bringing him back but it does make some sense. I’m not going to be surprised if it goes down. .

Kwame back to the lakers at around $3mm a year is the smartest thing that could ever be done. It’s like getting Ben Wallace in his prime for 1/2 the price.Basketball commenters are all a bunch of f-----morons. .

I am not a Kwame Brown fan, and was glad when he was traded. I felt it was crazy to be playing him over Turiaf. However, I believe if the Lakers can get him for or very near the minimum salary, then they have made a good choice. Kwame, if he gets his head together, can provide a solid defensive contribution off the bench and though he is a unreliable offensive player at best, at least he knows the triangle offense. .

OH no! He doesn’t jump much. If he does, it is only once. He is careless and has no hustle. cut him loose. .

if the lakers get kwame back it’ll be like they got pau and got the garbage they threw out back. Y would they do that? they know how garbage he is... they might as well get a D-Leaguer or carl landry to fill the void .

I’ll go for it. You all are missing the point of relative value. If Lakers can get him for the minimum salary, Brown would be by far the best defender coming from the bench, and improvement over Mihn and also over Turiaf .

I don’t know... let’s just remember what a genius phil jackson is. I mean, dude even was able to handle dennis rodman... but turning kwame brown into a defensive force... probably impossible even for the zen-master. btw: greetz from germany \1 .

i hope the lakers arent that stupid. kupchak’s exec of the year status would totally be lost if he brought kwame back. he was absolutely worthless to the lakers. they want another big man? theo ratliff, pj brown, othella harrington, jamale magloire, juwan howard, david harrison, ANY one of those guys (all free agents) would be a bajillion times more valuable than kwame and probably wouldnt cost so much either, considering they just let turiaf leave. kwame is by far the biggest disappointment in the history of #1 picks. quite sad really. .

At this point, we’ve established that Kwame will never live up to his #1 draft pick status, however if Lakers are to replace Ronny’s production with Kwame, then I think he’s more than capable of providing that 6 pt, 4 rb, off the bench. (without the energy/passion though)I would love to see Kwame back to the Lakers, he gives them size off the bench (its either him or Mbenga), and he’ll probably come cheap, if nothing else, Lakers fan should thank him for partaking in the steal of the century ala. Pau Gasol trade. .
