Arizona Could Charge Tim Donaghy, Adding Fuel To Phoenix Suns-San Antonio Spurs Fire

August 17 07

The Associated Press reports that Tim Donaghy could face charges in Arizona:

Former NBA referee Tim Donaghy could face charges in Arizona’s most populous county if investigations by the league and FBI show that he deliberately miscalled two Phoenix Suns playoff games this year, authorities said.

Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas has sent letters to NBA Commissioner David Stern and the head of the FBI in Washington, saying he wants to know whether Donaghy gambled on the two Suns road playoff games, provided inside information to gamblers or helped determine the outcome by making bad officiating calls.

Thomas said the games in question are the April 29 game against the Los Angeles Lakers and the May 12 game against the San Antonio Spurs.

The Suns beat the Lakers 113-110 in the April 29 game, but lost to the Spurs 108-101 on May 12 in Game 3 of the Western Conference semifinals.

My Quick Take: Two things are worth noting here. First, the Donaghy scandal won’t disappear. As details emerge, fans will wonder how the ref influenced games that involved their team. Anything that can call into question a sport’s integrity is a nightmare, a worst case scenario for all the stakeholders involved. So far Commissioner Stern has been able to sweep this mess under the rug. This won’t continue.

Second, the cries will be loudest in Phoenix, where the lawsuit is based. No coincidence there. The Suns already felt robbed because of the game five suspensions to Boris Diaw and Amare Stoudemire. When news broke that Donaghy officiated game three of their series against the Spurs, Phoenix fans sent me emails and messages specifically questioning the fouls called on Amare Stoudemire. They used words like “phantom” and “fixed.”

But this isn’t a case of spilt milk. I’m paraphrasing here, but ESPN’s Bill Simmons, a Boston die-hard and neutral observer, called game three of the Suns-Spurs series the worst officiated game he had ever seen.

Now put yourself in the shoes of a San Antonio fan. All they ever hear is that their team is boring and ruined basketball with their methodical style (Please Note: these are not my personal thoughts. I have a lot of respect for the Spurs and enjoy watching them). Phil Jackson put aside his Zen-like ways and said their first NBA Title should have an asterisk beside it because it was won during a strike shortened season.

Now a bunch of up-tempo, run-and-gun, seven seconds to shoot Phoenix fans are going to continue to question the validity of San Antonio’s well-deserved 2007 Title. Unfortunately, for Spur fans, the Donaghy scandal has given them a legitimate leg to stand on.

I hope this thing goes away. I really do. But I believe the Tim Donaghy scandal is just starting. And with it, a Pandora’s Box of problems shall plague the NBA.

Game 1 - Nash had to sit out because he could not stop bleeding. (what if he stayed?). Game 2 - Suns wonGame 3 - BS! Game 4 - Suns won, UNECESSARY shove by horry to Nash. Game 5 - Suspensions of Diaw and AmareGame 6 - The Spurs win their first FAIR game, and the series...Oh, and for anyone that thinks the suns suck for blowng the lead in game 5: DID YOU KNOW? that they only had SIX available players? 2 of which never see more than around 20MPG? (kurt and jones). they were eventually going to get tired in the 4th...The 2007 World champions SA spurs ******** thanks to the following: David Stern, Stu Jackson, Parker’s forehead, and, of course, Tim Donaghy .

Ok people are saying that it doesnt matter if Suns won that game, because Spurs beat them 3 other times. Listen. One game can change a whole series around. Cant deny that. One extra win for the Suns can energize them for the rest of the series. The win could leak on, and momentum can swing in the Suns favour. So we can partly blame the ref for stealing a game and series from us. .

The question is not if the game was fixed, it is why do the referees continue to let Bowen mug players. In game three when he kicked Nash in the groin, the referee closest didn’t even call it. Bowen was only called for two fouls in the whole game. What a fiasco. .

i like the suns more than spurs but suns fans should get over this Donaghy reff’d game 3 but he wasn’t there the rest of the games. spurs still bet them 3 other times without him having any effect, people should stop trying to taint the spurs well earned title .

san antonio fixed is what they should rename themselves, nash is suppose to have a ring now and i think its only fair that all this attention to those what seems simple calls were in fact pivotal in the playoffs last year because amare completely had duncan on the ropes .

The people of Arizona should feel embarassed if this actually gets legs because it would add unnecessary fuel to an already scandal plagued series in which the Suns should have won game 6 with a 17 point lead then blew it WITHOUT TIM DONAGHY HELPING THE SPURS!! Then they do not even bother to show up in game 6. I believe the spurs beat a full strength Suns roster 3 out of 5 times...GET OVER IT SUNS FANS YOUR TEAM JUST DOESNT HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP...DEAL WITH IT!! .

San antonio title is tainted. They didn’t win it fair, they had help from TD the ref. .
