Jerry Buss Shouldn’t Have Publicly Discussed Trading Kobe Bryant & L.A. Lakers’ Future

October 11 07

Lakers’ owner Jerry Buss discusses Kobe Bryant’s future with the Los Angeles Times:

On trading Bryant
"I would certainly listen. At any time, I think you have to do that with anybody. It’s just part of the game, to listen to somebody who has a dissatisfied player that you think is going to fit. You can’t keep too many loyalties. You’ve got to look at it as a business. He looks at it the same way I look at it."

On what other teams offered for Bryant

"What was offered was not ever under consideration. And I told Kobe that. I told him I would try my best to accommodate his wishes, but that I could not afford to let him go unless we got comparable talent, if there is such a thing. . . . I even told him occasionally what I was offered and I said, ’You have to know that this is not in favor of the Lakers. This would just be terrible to do.’ And he said, ’I understand.’ "

On Bryant signing an extension
"If he feels up to it, then he will sign an extension, And hopefully, that’s what’s going to happen. I’m very fond of him. . . . If he feels up to it, I think he would probably declare himself for a couple of years."

On Mitch Kupchak’s work as GM

"I think Mitch does a terrific job because I’m right there and I know what’s happening. Mitch has done everything humanly possible. Our team does not have a lot of tradable players. Hopefully we will have some in time, but currently we do not."

My Quick Take: Everything seemed fine in Laker-land just a few short days ago. Kobe Bryant publicly re-pledged his loyalty to the purple-and-gold and their dysfunctional summer seemed like a distant memory.

Then the team’s owner gave a tell-all interview to the L.A. Times. Buss discussed Bryant’s uncertain future, his failed attempts to trade his superstar, and even endorsed public enemy number one, GM Mitch Kupchak.

Now the team is back to being tabloid-fodder. Why would the owner open up to a reporter, let alone grant a tell-all interview? What’s the point?

The Lakers are preparing for the upcoming season and must now deal with another distraction. Their superstar, Bryant, must once again answer questions about his future. And teams know Bryant is available, so they’ll offer very little in trade packages because they want to acquire him on the cheap.

Much of the team’s goodwill has been undone by their owner. Nice job Dr. Buss. All in a day’s work/feature interview, right Jerry?

Buss, as owner, is entitled to his opinion. But he should have avoided the interview. And if he had to talk to reporters, then he should have lied. Tell the L.A. Times that the Lakers never considered trading Bryant.

Good teams almost always have good owners. The Lakers were the aberration, winning all their NBA Titles despite Dr. Buss’ brainless antics.

Simple situation. Either the Lakers make a substantial trade by the deadline for the usual suspects (O’neal, Marion, AK47) or Kobe is gone. Buss is no different from Kobe, he wants to win and it’s not happening. Media explosions aside, this team has issues and is gonna be real different real soon. .

who really cares this much about kobe and why?!! i mean come on now really..... the game is bigger than one individual player. maybe if some people can just forget about that baby then all this stupid contreversy would go away and we could get back to enjoying the league. .

Dr. Buss is probably losing his mind, signs of senility. Who would want to be famous for trading both Shaq & Kobe? Kobe was right when he said "Dr. Buss is an idiot!". He needs to sell this franchise quick to an owner who loves the game and not more interested in having sex with young girls young enough to be his granddaughters. He and his son Jim are a bunch of incompetent morons who have no business running a basketball franchise. The money is all they care about and if that doomsday happens where Kobe is traded, all Lakers fans should boycott the team for good until they get a new sensible owner who is passionate about winning. .

By saying that he will\can trade Bryant he makes needless tension on players. Few days ago everything seem to be fine and even if it wasn’t it shouldn’t become a public issue. Buss says he’s a business man-to me right now he’s killing his own business & I don’t get it. Like someone wrote before-traded Shaq & now Bryant=way to go mr. businessman. .

Buss should sell the Lakers and I think he wants the Lakers to be a laughing stock. With the current line up, surely the Lakers will be struggling before trade deadline comes. They have more oppurtunities to land impact players but they keep on counting on Bynum who still needs a lifetime to become a superstar. Wake up Lakerland and Dr. Buss mind is not sane anymore, he needs a caregiver. Trading Kobe is not a solution, it creates a problem. .

it could be that buss just wants to open people up to the idea of a trade with the lakers by throwing kobe’s name out there and then some way, some how work out a trade that would benefit the lakers w/out losing kobe....but of course, buss isn’t that smart and neither is kupchak...so...yea, that would just make buss the worst owner on the planet for trading two of the most dominant players in the NBA within a span of what? 3? 4 years? .

If the Lakers get off to a slow start and are struggling in mid-season, a Kobe trade is a good possibility. But, as for Buss and this interview, I don’t think it was to let the rest of the league’s GMs know that Kobe is available. It’s not like there are a thousand GMs out there, I think Mitch and Buss can pick up the phone and put in personal calls to the 30+ GMs and make the same point. He doesn’t have to do it through a LA Times article. This is 95% public posturing, preparing Laker fans for the possibility of a trade, because there’s a good chance it might happen, and 5% frustration talking. .

D’Angelo is a very credible source I would actually put some stock into what he’s saying. As a Clipper fan, I’m all for Kobe leaving LA, peace out Kobe, let me know if need help packing I’ll move all your sh*t for free to get you out of LA ASAP! .

I think the purpose of the interview was to let other teams know that he will consider offers if they are reasonable.Up to this point, most other GM’s probably assumed there was no way Buss would trade Kobe, so why make the considerable effort to put something together? This is probably why the only offers the Lakers got following Kobe’s summer tirage were just low-ball nonsense. Now, other team’s GM’s (especially those in big markets) will have to take the possibility of Kobe being traded seriously. This creates a more active market for the superstar, which ultimately increases his trade value just by sheer competition.I think Buss realizes that this team is not going to be as successful as Kobe wants it to be within the next two years, and that he will ultimately opt out of his contract at the end of 2009. So, he is positioning himself to get the most value out of him while he still can (i.e. this season) as opposed to having to relive the Shaq nightmare. .

The quote re: the extension has nothing to do with Kobe. Buss was clearly referring to Phil. .

A LA SPORTS REPORTER BY THE NAME OF D’ANGELO MARTINEZ SAID BUSS ALREADY HAS A PLAN IN PLACE. IF THE LAKERS AREN’T IN THE TOP 10 BY MID-SEASON AND HAVE A LEGIT SPOT TO GET INTO THE PLAYOFFS. HE HAS A DEAL IN THE WORKS WITH THE BULLS, INVOLVING BEN GORDON, AND A FEW OTHER KEY PLAYERS ONE OF THOSE LIKELY PLAYERS COULD BE BIG BEN AS WELL. I HOPE THAT DOESN’T HAPPEN BUT WHO KNOWS ONLY TIME WILL TELL .
