Shaquille O’Neal, Steve Nash & Phoenix Suns Don’t Have Luxury of Adjustment Period

February 25 08

The Arizona Republic is reporting the following:

Phoenix is 1-2 with Shaquille O’Neal, but patience is being preached because of his transition and consideration of its opponents ( Lakers, Celtics, Pistons). "We still have to be realistic about things," O’Neal said. "We’ve still got a lot of figuring out to do. If everybody just sticks to their role, we should be fine.”

My AM Take: They’re right. Nothing happens overnight or in three games. And under ideal circumstances, the Phoenix Suns and Shaquille O’Neal would get an adjustment period.

After all, the Suns must adapt to O’Neal. Steve Nash has to learn his tendencies. Amare Stoudemire has to shift to the four-spot. And driving to the basket becomes complicated with a 7-1, 320 pound center.

Also, playing defense without Shawn Marion isn’t easy. ‘The Matrix’ is a stud in his own end. He can guard four, sometimes five positions and dominates the glass with endless energy.

Of course, O’Neal has to adjust to Phoenix’s Seven Seconds to Shoot, run-and-gun style. In his first three games out west, the big fella deserves credit for rebounding and trying to defend the pick-and-roll.

So the Suns need time. Shaq needs time. Unfortunately, they don’t have it. Six games separate first and ninth in the highly competitive Western Conference. Take a week off, lose a few games, and your season is done.

For example, the Denver Nuggets are an impressive 33-22. But if the regular season ended today, Carmelo Anthony and Allen Iverson would be golfing. Remember those lovable Blazers? Forget their December run because Portland wouldn’t qualify either.

An adjustment period is a luxury Phoenix doesn’t have. They must learn on the fly or risk falling down the Western Conference standings.

The Phoenix Suns are one of the most exciting teams in the NBA. There run and gun style of basketball is not only great to watch but it has propelled them to the top spot in the Western Conference. This would have been the story two weeks ago. What changed you may say. Everything if you ask me. The Suns went from a hot rod to a golf cart. Simply the Suns made the worst mistake in the NBA this year, aside from Isaiah thinking his boys would play for him. They traded away everything that made the Suns the Suns when they traded Shawn Marion to the Miami Heat for an aged and decrepit Shaquille O’neal. Shawn Marion was the Suns, and before there was a Steve Nash or an Amare Stoudemire there was Shawn Marion, the Matrix. He is the reason they could attract a superstar like Steve Nash. He plays like he is 7 foot and hustles like he hasn’t eaten in 7 days. The Suns gave away a guy that can give you 20 points, 10 rebounds, 2 steals, and a block or two, and can defend the other teams best player albeit a 1,2,3,or a 4. I think he might be able to cover most 5’s in the league. I’m not saying he can do this each and every night but he has the capability to do it on any given night. Now we know that trades are a vital part of the NBA and we also know that when a player is disgruntled with his team it can be detrimental to the whole organization, but what did the Suns get in return for on the best team players in the league, a guy any player would love to play with. They got Shaq Diesel, but no one told the Suns that the price of fuel has become overpriced and less efficient over the past two to three years. Shaq for all he’s worth is a Hall of Fame Center and will go down as one of the most dominating players to ever play the game but when you’ve lost it there’s no getting it back and the Diesel has lost it and has lost it for some time now. His numbers have steadily decreased and the once Superman of the league has relinquished his claim to supernatural ability circa Dwight Howard and his aerial display last week. Shaq a lot of times seems as though he doesn’t belong on the court and it’s hard to watch, sort like Ali in his last fights or Jordan in his return. It just isn’t right. I truly feel like the Suns were better off trying to get a player like Ben Wallace a player that can run and play a looser type of game. Shaq has them hampered and I don’t see how they will get home court advantage or even make the playoffs if they don’t figure something out and figure that something out real fast. The West is no place to test an experiment. There is a showdown at the OK Corral every night and the Suns are a little slow at the draw right now. I would love to see a high energy and highly talented team like the Warriors play the Suns in the First round. To show them what they miss. Until that time I will be watching and observing one of the biggest science experiments this side of Transylvania. .

As a die hard Heat fan, I just want to say one thing to Steve Kerr: Thank-You,Thank-You,Thank-You! Having the worst record in the NBA is frustrating, but not having to watch Shaq out there bricking free throws is a relief. Shaq flitted out of Miami and left the Heat in absolute shambles. The same fate awaits the Suns. It’ll be years before we recover from the big franchise destroyer. Enjoy the rest of your season Suns fans. .
