Shawn Marion or Shaquille O’Neal: Breaking Down Phoenix Suns’ Options

March 09 08

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports on Phoenix coach Mike D’Antoni rationalizing the Shawn Marion for Shaquille O’Neal trade:

"What people don’t understand, Shawn was gone," D’Antoni told Denver’s Rocky Mountain News. "I mean, he was going to go. There were some problems with contracts and all that.

"It wasn’t like, ’We have this team for the next three years, everybody’s happy, everybody’s cool, let’s go with it.’"

My Quick Take: So far The Big Acquisition hasn’t worked. Although it’s early, I doubt this group will come together for Phoenix.

The Suns logic for making this trade was flawed. O’Neal was supposedly brought-in for defense, but he’s never been a stopper. Even during his glory days with Los Angeles, he rarely jumped out on pick-and-rolls or committed to shutting down opposing centers.

And D’Antoni is wrong to act like Phoenix didn’t have a choice. They could’ve kept Shawn Marion, let him opt-out of his contract this summer and then reaped the benefits of 18 million dollars in available cap space.

For example, suppose the Marion trade never happened and The Matrix opted-out at season’s end. Phoenix, with their warm climate and star point guard, could’ve easily lured unrestricted free agents like Elton Brand, Corey Maggette, or Antawn Jamison.

I’d take Brand, Maggette, or Jamison over O’Neal. And teams with cap space always have options to upgrade talent. But instead of exercising logic and patience, amateur hour took over and the Suns’ front office got hustled into assuming O’Neal’s twenty million dollar per season contract.

Now D’Antoni has his team for the foreseeable future. Of course, it appears to be the wrong team and their window for an NBA Title has likely passed.

And two weeks later, what does everyone have to say now that the Suns are on a 7-game win streak? They’ve been unbelievable and doing everything everyone said they couldn’t and the Suns and Shaq said they could. They’re holding their teams to low FG%, outrebounding teams, still running and scoring an average of 117 pts over the 7 game win streak while holding 4 of 7 opponents to under 100 pts and shooting % in the low 40s. Still think it won’t work? I’d say, "HUGE SURPRISE! WELL DONE, MIKE, STEVE, AMARE, GRANT, RAJA, SHAQ AND ALL THE GUYS! WELL DONE!" .

Whats all this trade hate for? fck marion. he’s gone. get you a Marion Heat jersey and deal with it. Shaq helped and hurt the defense at the same time. He can cover the other team’s big man by himself whch means they dont have to double and give up 3’s. But he will get you murdered with pick n roll defense(check the Utah game where Deron Williams ran pick and roll every second Shaq was on the floor). Once they figure out how to work the offense with Shaq and decide how they play pick and roll defense, they will be fine. Quit watching sportscenter and watch the actual games b4 commenting. (that means you too Oly) .

The trade is done now. The first thing I want to say Marion was an allstar before Steve ever got to PHX and he put up the same numbers. Now Marion was not going to opt out of his contract unless PHX gave an extension and he would have taken less money. So all of you people that don’t know what your talking about need to shut the Hell up.... Marion was the heart and soul of PHX. Now yo have 3 horrible defenders and one good one and one average defender. They don’t have a chance in the west. .

The problem with your argument is that Marion won’t opt-out. He will only do so if he’s given an extension. He knows he won’t make $18M on the open market. .

Marion will never be happy unless he is THE MAN. Now that Wade is out for the year in Miami, he can now be the man in Miami, for the next 20 games which they will probably lose. He has already been complaining about the effort of his team mates. He will never be happy and he has proved he will never be an all star again without Nash feeding him the ball. Wade will never surrender the ball as long as he has any chance of shooting. Even Marcus Banks has outscored Marion in Miami. What does that say about Marion being able to create his own shots? Without Nash, he is a fairly good small forward. Good riddance and WELCOME SHAQ. .

The Suns losses are only due to the simple fact that the other teams outscored them by the buzzer. Even so, they are better than 12 teams in the east and 9 in the west. How bad is it, really? Sunday’s win proved they have what it takes. The only challenge now is bringing it on a consistent basis. These are the Suns, not the Wolves or Heat. Those teams would never be able to work it out. Heck, 90% of the teams in the league couldn’t do it. But they are still elite and trying to deal with a massive change. They’ll figure it out. Simple, really! .

The Suns weren’t trying to unload him for the past 3 or 4 years, in fact, they were trying to KEEP him. There were just so many rumors surrounding such a talented player like himself. .

This was the biggest mistake the suns have made since they traded nash, finley, and a.c. green for Jason kidd!!!!! doing this trade in the middle of the season is going to be the down fall for the suns this year. Marion was pissed with the suns for the simple fact is that the suns have been trying to trade him for the pasted 3 or 4 seasons when all he did was give a 110% in every game with out complaning or asking for play’s set just for him... He was very unselfish and was a playing the most minutes almost every game. Miami got the best deal out of this trade and i hope the suns realize this so, it doesn’t happen again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! .

I agreee with this post. Even dough the Suns won, they still won’t be able to become a defensive side overnight. This was a bad move .

I agree with BiAbi, the Suns’ losses were NOT because of Shaq. Shaq did his part, everyone else didn’t. It had nothing do to with the trade, the Suns just weren’t in sync and were out of rhythm. But after today’s game against the Spurs, I feel the Suns really broke through. Shaq made an immediate impact, and his presence in the paint really showed up big time down the stretch. Plus, Stoudemire with 5 fouls and Shaq with 5 fouls, they both played through the last 5 and a half minutes without fouling out. .

People say that the suns’ consecutive losses are due to shaqs arrival but i disagree! I think that its because of marion’s departure with his own skills that shaq cant make good!!Shawn should have stayed in phoenix , kerr proved that he sucks big time! .

Marion is such an important part on the defensive end.... .
