The Thursday Question: Will Kobe Bryant Finish His Career With The Los Angeles Lakers?

July 19 07

The NBA can be a dirty business. Players are commodities. They can be cut, waived, released, sent to the NBDL, sold, or traded at any time. There’s little security. But plenty of money as compensation.

A lucky few transcend this climate of instability and spend an extended amount of time in one city. You could never see them playing for another team. You could never see them putting on another uniform.

Kobe Bryant used to be one of those lucky few. He’s a Hollywood-Laker. Always has been. Even when he was just a high school senior in Philadelphia, Bryant was really a Hollywood-Laker. Who, other than Kobe, would take Moesha to the prom as a seventeen-year old?

Until recently, there was no way Bryant would play for any team other than Los Angeles. For so long, he’s been the Lakers-the epitome of the purple-and-gold. But his trade demands and refusal to clarify his future has thrown everything in doubt.

Below is the case for Bryant finishing or leaving the Lakers. We want you, the HoopsVibe faithful, to read both sides of the argument, listen to your gut, and answer The Thursday Question: Will Kobe Bryant finish his career with the Los Angeles Lakers?

Why Kobe will finish his career with the Lakers:

  • Bryant is the Lakers. Nothing else needs to be said.
  • Bryant has a no trade clause in his contract. He can veto any trade.
  • The Lakers won’t trade him because they can’t get back equal value. Such a concept doesn’t exist.
  •  Los Angeles is a city of stars. The Lakers’ owners, the Buss family, know they need a big-name talent, like Bryant, to draw fans.

Why Kobe won’t finish career with the Lakers:

  • Bryant and the Lakers have passed the point of no return. Too much damage has been done.
  • Bryant has an opt-out clause in his contract. He can become an unrestricted free agent and leave the Lakers in two seasons. He’ll likely exercise this clause and head to the Eastern Conference.
  • The Lakers are aware of the opt-out clause and will have to trade Bryant just to get something in return.
  • Los Angeles is a fickle city of stars. There are other big name stars and other sports. They’re tired of Bryant and are ready for something new.

i have to admit that trade kobe is a tough decision but just have a look at lakers roster , its a bunch of weak guys not really good !! kobe is the best playa by now he doesnt deserve that. he has to go in a more complete team which has a chance to pretend for the title! lakers era is over they need to rebuild and QUICKLY otherwise they ll end up like the grizzlies ( oh my god such a weak team ) kobe shouldnt finish his career in this kind of team , hes suffering out there please trade him. And i would like to tell el guapito that kobe isnt the nba cos the " a "a of NBA can be transcribe for ASSIST and kobe doesnt mamke any assist so please shu ut !! .

BIGGER question that precludes kobe’s future in LA: can the lakers build a championship contender around kobe within 3 years? if YES, kobe stays and stays quiet. if NO, then wowzers. kobe is the lakers, BUT he is a competitor first. .

4 me Kobe is a kind of Lakers’ symbol when I think about lakers he’s the 1st thing that comes to my mind & love him or hate him he’s a very good player no doubt about it. I think that Kobe’ll end his career in L.A. He’s too expencive 4 most east teams & there are only few who could affor him & they’re not interrested. Besides letting Kobe out of L.A would be the most stupidity in the world-there’s no possibility to have benefits 4 lakers with such a trade. Kobe needs to be surrounded by young players & together as a TEAM they should learn to play with each other. But when the opportunity of KG came out then suddenly Odom, Bynum- considered as a huge talent-where doomed. The lakers’ bosses are inconsistent-they should carry the s---they started & makin’ it better by supply with the new guys not with gettin’ rid of the older fundamentals. Of course if he decides to leave that’s his choice but personally I’d love to see him ending with the lakers-I just can’t imagine him in other colorways cause he’s a laker and that’s it .

KOBE IS NOT GOING ANYWHERE. HE’S JUST BLOWING OFF SOME STEAM AND TRYING TO GET THE LAKERS’ FRONT OFFICE GET UP OFF THEIR ASSES. I’M A HUGE KOBE FAN AND I HOPE HE RETIRES A LAKER BUT I’M A LAKER FAN FIRST, I CHEER FOR THE NAME ON THE FRONT OF THE JERSEY NOT THE NAME ON THE BACK!! WHAT THE LAKERS ORGANIZATION REALLY NEEDS TO DO IS GET RID OF MITCH AND FIND SOMEBODY WITH COMMON SENSE AND SOME NUTS. .

Kobe will retire as a Laker. They will kiss and make up because if the Lakers trade him to another team that team will spend the remainder of his years trying to rebuild then Kobe will be worse off than he is now. I think he knows that and that is why he has become so quiet. The Lakers have always strived to be winners and I think they will give him what he needs to be championship contendets soon. .

Kobe has the right to choose where he wants to go. People should not blame him for being want to WIN! Without Kobe, Lakers will just be a joke! The Staple center will be empty. Lakers front office needs to do whatever they can to keep Kobe. Build the team around Kobe. I do hope he stay. But if he leaves, I don’t blame him and I will follow him whereever he goes and cheer for him. .

Hey Dr.Buss, why dont you fire whoever said that about Kobe, Get rid of all the back-stabbers, take over as GM for a minute to get something done cause kupcheck is too much of a pussy to pull the trigger, and get some freekin talent around Kobe, Maybe then he will see that you aint playin, and that you are serious about wanting to win now. Personally I think Kobe has a right to be pissed off. Read Phil Jacksons book and you can see some of the stuff that they are talking about. jeannie telling him that bryant has 10 years to make the money, to fill the seats, to sell the lakers, while shaq is all but done. It also says in there that they are scaling back. So it looks to me that, if they told Kobe they where going to put a championship team together around him right away, then there is proof that they told Phil otherwise. I would love Kobe to be a Laker for life. But I dont expect him to swallow it. He has a right to be pissed off, To have a bunch of quiters around you for teamates, its such a piss off, he did everything humanly possible this season to get the lakers to the playoffs, but what is it for, he cant continue to carry this team like that. He needs some help. Thats all he was asking for. If he leaves I would love to see him go to the suns first, chicago second. Him and Stoudemire would be insane. Kobe needs to do whatever he thinks is right for him, you only live once. .

I dont know what he’ll do. its entirely up to him. if the lakers win 50-55 games this season he’ll stay. If he gets traded the team he goes to no matter what will be worse than the lakers. If the lakers dont trade him and he opts out no one can pay him the money he’s worth. But nobody knows whats going to happen excpet kobe. .

kobe will finish his career on a worthless team that can’t even make the playoffs cause he’ll command too much money and alienate every decent player around him to not want to play on the same team!!i can see it now... "Now retiring the jersey of kobe bryant.... the memphis grizzlies!!" .

to tell you the truth i fuckin hope that he quits his bull shit. people like reggie miller, one of the greatest shooters ever that did away with the likes of jordan and the knicks to put it like that, never won the ultimate price he deserved. but he never did this things kobes doing. karl malone as well as many other stars didnt win the gold and kobe got 3 rings. so i think what he wants is the mvp. either way im sick of him and hope he f-----retires. .
