Why Philadelphia 76ers & Andre Iguodala Haven’t Agreed On Contract Extension

Philly.com reports on Andre Iguodala’s contract negotiations with the 76ers:

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst. That’s Andre Iguodala’s mantra as the calendar rushes toward Oct. 31.

That’s not only the date of the 76ers’ regular-season opener in Toronto, it’s also the NBA-mandated deadline for a contract extension for the Sixers’ best player.

The two sides have until then to finalize an extension of up to 5 years on Iguodala’s rookie deal. If they can’t work it out by then, they must wait until July 1 to resume talks. At that point, the Sixers would hold a right of first refusal on any offer Iguodala might receive from another team.

My Quick Take: The first A.I., Allen Iverson, was a Philly institution. But the second A.I., Andre Iguodala, gets no love from the city that made brotherly love famous.

Iguodala’s quest for a contract extension has been ignored by fans, media, and even his own 76er team. This is strange. After Iverson got traded in December, the stat-stuffing swing showed he’s more than a walking highlight reel-becoming one of four players to average at least 18 points, 5 assists, and 5 rebounds. The other three: Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, and Tracy McGrady.

The October 31st deadline is looming and ‘Iggy’, for some reason, is waiting on an extension. Here’s why:

Philadelphia is saving cap space for the summer. Come July, Chris Webber’s inflated contract finally comes off the books and Aaron Mckie’s deal also expires. The 76ers will be $30 million dollars under the cap and aren’t ready to compromise their newfound flexibility on Iguodala’s extension.

Basketball is no longer a priority for Comcast, the cable conglomerate that owns the 76ers. Fans have stayed away; rumors are flying that Comcast still wants out of the NBA. A big contract, like Iguodala’s extension, makes the team less attractive to potential buyers.

There’s no rush for Philadelphia to sign Iguodala. The 76ers can keep him through the 2008-09 season by tabling a qualifying offer.

Bottom line: Iguodala will likely sign a long-term extension with the club this summer.

on 05.30.2008		 Sixers need to sign Iggy fast. I thought he was the franchise player. Sixers are so cheap man. and yet they pay Dalembert like 12 mil a year or something that high? what is that. If you were to dish out that type of money, I think Miller and Iggy are the ones who deserve it. Iggy needs to get a contract extention now! (plus i just bought his jersey! It’ll will suck big time if he goes to another team!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) .

on 11.1.2007		 The Sixers have an incompetent management group . they tell us the Sixers have a plan. Unless they meant taking one of the first round picks they landed for Iverson just to trade it away for a player to be cut later and then failing to sign the player they say the team will be built around, I like almost every other life long Sixers fan am at a loss to see any direction at all. There is no way to justify not getting back a number one pick for the one they traded away this past draft even if it was a pick 3 to 5 years from now. They told everyone they didn’t have room on the roster for three rookies yet took back a pick this year knowing he had almost no chance to make the roster. With all due respect to the Pat Croce years the Sixers have been void of a top flight GM since Pat Williams left for Orlando. Yes I know that Croce was not the GM, But he did say later that if he was still running the Sixers they never would have signed Derrick Coleman. That statement from him proves he had a say in player movement. They say that all the money they will have under the cap after this year will allow them to sign a top tier free agent or two. That is a joke. Who in their right mind will come play for this bunch of idiots knowing how inept the front office is. (This is the definition of inept from Merriam-Webster. not suitable to the time, place, or occasion : inappropriate often to an absurd degree). The only thing missing from Webster’s was a picture of the Sixers front office personal. This team will be spinning their wheels as long as King is calling the shots. The man is in way over his head. He has done nothing to warrant the support of the fans and the belief that this team will be relevant anytime in the near future. Don’t be surprised if Andre Igoudala figures out this summer what a bunch of losers are running the Sixers and decides to sign with a team in another city. .

on 10.26.2007		 He is the new A.I. and is the face of the franchise. He has put up great numbers, great effort, and has not caused trouble. He deserves the extension Philly needs to quick being cheap and get the deal done, before they lose out on the future .
