Why The Boston Celtics Should Sign Brent Barry

February 23 08

The Boston Herald is reporting the following:

NBA sources said last night that the Celtics are poised to make a move on Brent Barry if and when he clears waivers.

My Quick Take: Could the Boston Celtics season-long search for a second-string point guard end with free agent Brent Barry?

All season, the Celtics have turned their back on veteran table-setters; the club said thanks but no thanks to Damon Stoudamire and Gary Payton, while Sam Cassell’s not-so-subtle left-coast overtures have been ignored.

Now Barry is available. He was waived by the Sonics after being traded from San Antonio to Seattle in the Kurt Thomas deadline day trade.

Why would Barry work in Beantown?

First, the lanky combo guard is a winner. His experience capturing NBA Titles in the River City with Tim Duncan and Tony Parker would help a mostly inexperienced Celtic squad.

Second, he’s a team-first, good guy. Barry has never pouted over minutes or shots. In fact, he uses his sense of humor to keep things loose. Years ago, in Seattle, he once broke tension between the players and coaching staff by playfully tossing chairs into former Sonic sideline boss Paul Westphal’s office.

Third, he has successfully manned a backcourt with Ray Allen before. Barry had an impressive half-season run in the Emerald City next to Jesus Shuttlesworth. His size, three-point stroke, defense, and basketball IQ would make him a natural for the Celtics.

Barry’s the best choice to spell Rajon Rondo. Hopefully, Boston GM Danny Ainge signs him to a pro-rated, veteran’s minimum contract for the rest of the season.

SUNS CAN NOT BEAT THE LAKERS. SUNS CAN NOT BEAT THE HORNETS. AND IF THE SUNS ARE LOOKING FOR ANOTHER 3POINT SHOOTER HE WONT GET THOSE SHOTS AGAINST SAN ANTONIO. SAN ANTONIO GUARDS THE 3POINT LINE BETTER THAN ANY TEAM. IF BARRY WANT TO WIN ANOTHER RING HE WILL NOT GO TO PHOENIX. RICK BARRY SHOULD UNDERSTAND IT’S NOT ABOUT HOW EXCITING A TEAM PLAYS ITS ABOUT WHO CAN WIN IT ALL AND PHOENIX WILL NOT WIN IT! AND THE SUNS HAVE PROVEN THAT THEY DONT PLAY DEFENSE. SHAQ BLOCKS A SHOT AND THEY CALL THAT DEFENSE. ASK DALLAS IF WINNING 67 GAMES IN THE REGULAR SEASON WAS THE GREATEST THING EVER! WOULD THEY TRADE THOSE 67GAMES IN FOR A CHAMPIONSHIP. SO IF BARRY WANTS TO BE WITH A CONTENDER HE’LL SIGN BACK WITH SAN ANTONIO. IF HE WANTS TO WATCH THE FINALS FROM HOME HE’LL SIGN WITH PHOENIX! .

He should go back to the Spurs and defend the title he won last year. He and his his wife are entrenched in the community and he has two rings with them, why not a third? .

Celtics should sign him - let him retire - then use him in a trade for top talent (you suck Dallas). .

The good teams need to stop stockpiling all the talent. Lose parity in the league and you won’t have a league - at least not one that’s worth watching. .

He should not go to Boston - unless he wants to have the best seats in the house to watch the Celtics play. He still has talent - he should go where he’ll play. .

He should go to Phoenix. The Suns are (arguably) the most entertaining team to watch. He’d fit in perfectly. .

Phoenix Suns are his best bet. They need another 3-point shooter - resulting in playing time. He already has a ring with SA - best chance to get one with Phx. .

Nah, Spurs won’t use him. Also, Spurs have way too much age on their squad already. Celts could use him for the rest of the season.Pickins’ are slim. .

He should go back to the Spurs, that’s the best place for him. .
