Arenas and Nowitzki named NBA Players of the Week

New York, NY (Basketball News) - Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas and Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki were named Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week, respectively, for games played Monday, November 29 through Sunday, December 5.

Arenas posted averages of 25.7 points, 5.3 assists, 4.7 rebounds and 2.7 steals per game last week, helping the Wizards to a 3-0 mark.

On December 1 against New Jersey, Arenas scored 30 points to go along with seven rebounds and five assists. Two days later, he collected 13 points, eight assists, four boards and four steals in a win over Atlanta. Arenas then poured in a season-high 34 points and had three steals in a triumph over Chicago on Saturday.

Nowitzki led the Mavericks to a 2-1 record last week, as he averaged a league- high 34.7 points, 12 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.67 blocks per game.

He netted 21 points and pulled down 13 boards in a loss to San Antonio on November 30. Two days later against Houston, he established a career and franchise-high with 53 points and also grabbed 16 rebounds in an overtime triumph over the Rockets. Nowitzki then completed his stellar week with a 30- point, four-block performance in a victory over Utah on Saturday.

Other nominees for Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week were Boston’s Mark Blount, Charlotte’s Emeka Okafor, Minnesota’s Sam Cassell, Orlando’s Kelvin Cato, Phoenix’s Quentin Richardson, Portland’s Zach Randolph and Sacramento’s Chris Webber.
