Arenas, Washington silence Jazz

Salt Lake City, UT (Basketball News) - Gilbert Arenas scored 31 points as Washington beat Utah 109-97 at the Delta Center, where Jazz legend Karl Malone had his No. 32 retired in the rafters.

Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler scored 27 points apiece for the Wizards, who have won two of three. Antonio Daniels scored 12 points, while Jared Jeffries added nine points and 12 rebounds.

Carlos Boozer notched 30 points and nine rebounds for the Jazz, who have dropped two of three. Andrei Kirilenko posted 21 points and eight rebounds. Deron Williams scored 14 points and dished nine assists, and Matt Harpring added 12 points and 11 boards.

Michael Ruffin converted a free throw with 50.5 seconds left to put Washington up 105-95. Arenas added a free throw with 42.9 seconds remaining, and Jamison drained a three-pointer to seal the win with 8.4 seconds left, as Utah never threatened in the final period. Williams scored a layup with 3.2 seconds left for the final margin.

Washington led 24-23 after one quarter. A Jamison jumper capped an 18-3 Washington run with 3:23 left in the second quarter to put the Wizards ahead 47-32.

The Jazz responded with a 9-0 run down the stretch sparked by a pair of Kirilenko free throws with 3:08 remaining. A Jamison jumper at the buzzer stopped the bleeding for Washington and it led 50-41 at halftime.

The Wizards added two points to their lead in the third quarter and carried a 78-67 lead into the fourth.

The Jazz played the second of a four-game homestand. They are 17-17 at the Delta Center this season, and will host Sacramento on Saturday and the Hornets on Monday.

Washington began a tough six-game road trip, and are just 11-19 as the visitor this season. They will also visit the Clippers, Golden State, Sacramento, Houston and San Antonio on the current swing.

Game Notes

This was the second and final meeting of the campaign between the clubs. On January 9th, Mehmet Okur scored 19 points and pulled down 13 rebounds as the Jazz won on the road against the Wizards, 97-89...Washington has lost 16 of its last 18 at Utah... Washington has won four of the last six meetings overall.
