Boone, NC (Basketball News) - Chris McFarland scored a game-high 20 points as the Appalachian State Mountaineers defeated the James Madison Dukes, 78-69, in a non-conference matchup at the Holmes Center.
Noah Brown poured in 16 points for the Mountaineers (3-1) while D.J. Thompson and Herbert Jones each chipped in 10 points.
James Madison (2-1) was led by Daniel Freeman who finished with 18 points. Cavell Johnson netted 16 points with seven rebounds, Ray Barbosa had 13 points and Gabriel Chami added 10 points in the losing effort.
Appalachian State jumped out to a 20-12 advantage over the Dukes midway through the first half and it held off a late James Madison charge to carry a 38-33 lead into the break.
The Mountaineers shot 50 percent from the floor in the second half and they outscored James Madison 40-36 in the stanza to take the seven-point victory.
Appalachian State shot 44.4 percent from the field in the contest while the Dukes shot 45.6 percent. James Madison struggled from three-point range as it sank just 3-of-14 attempts from beyond the arc in the game.
