Cleveland, OH (Basketball News) - Ronald Murray scored 19 points and dished out six assists as the Cleveland Cavaliers edged the Atlanta Hawks, 100-99, at Quicken Loans Arena in the regular season finale for both teams.
With the victory, Cleveland reached the 50-win mark for the first time since the 1992-93 campaign.
Anderson Varejao posted 14 points and 18 rebounds while Donyell Marshall scored 16 points for the Cavaliers, who will be the No. 4 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs and will take Washington on in the first round.
Cleveland did not play several of its regulars, including LeBron James and Larry Hughes.
Josh Smith netted a game-high 21 points and added five boards for Atlanta, which finished with a record of 26-56. Al Harrington had 16 points and 11 rebounds in the loss.
Atlanta jumped out to a 30-18 advantage by the end of the first quarter, but were unable to keep up its torrid pace.
Instead, it was the Cavs that caught fire in the second stanza, using a 14-0 charge to pull ahead. Damon Jones had six points in the burst, including a three-pointer with 6:46 remaining that pulled Cleveland within four at 37-33. Zydrunas Ilgauskas scored on a tip-in moments later, and Stephen Graham followed with a jumper to knot the game. Ilgauskas put an exclamation point on the run with a dunk that moved Cleveland ahead 39-37 with 3:50 to play in the half.
By intermission, the Cavaliers extended the lead to 49-43.
Cleveland continued to stretch it advantage in the third quarter, and built an 80-66 edge heading into the final 12 minutes.
Atlanta chipped away in the fourth, though, and used a 12-0 run midway through the stanza to move within three. Harrington led the spurt with six points, including a driving finger roll with 7:46 left that cut the deficit to 83-80.
The Hawks kept it close the rest of the way, and took advantage of a couple missed Cleveland free throws to pull within one on a three-pointer by Smith with seven ticks on the clock.
Marshall was immediately fouled but missed both attempts from the stripe, giving Atlanta one last chance. Smith’s three at the buzzer rimmed out, though, giving the Cavs the win.
