NBA Game Summary - Memphis at Minnesota

02.26.2006

Minneapolis, MN (Basketball News) - Ricky Davis scored a season-high 35 points, as the Minnesota Timberwolves defeated the Memphis Grizzlies, 105-99, at the Target Center.

Davis, who also had seven rebounds and five assists, scored the final 12 points for Minnesota and 15 of the Timberwolves’ 24 points in the fourth quarter.

"We didn’t guard him (Davis), we just fouled him is what we did," said Memphis coach Mike Fratello. "We put him on the line 20 times."

Kevin Garnett contributed 17 points, 10 boards and seven assists before being ejected, and Marcus Banks netted 13 and dished out eight assists for the Timberwolves, who snapped a two-game losing streak and won for just the third time in their last 12 contests. Mark Blount and Rashad McCants scored 12 points apiece.

With Minnesota leading 64-61 in the third quarter, Garnett was ejected at the 7:47 mark for tossing the ball into the stands and accidentally hitting a fan in the face with the ball after being called for an offensive foul.

I by no means meant to hit any fans," said Garnett. "I didn’t even look where I tossed it. I apologized both to the girl and the father."

Pau Gasol paced the Grizzlies with 23 points and Chucky Atkins added 22 points, but just four in the second half, in Memphis’ third straight defeat.

After the ejection, the Timberwolves built a 70-62 lead on Banks’ jumper, but the Grizzlies countered with 10-2 streak, including six points from Hakim Warrick, to tie the game at 72. However, Minnesota closed the quarter with nine unanswered points to grab an 81-72 advantage heading into the final frame.

Memphis cut the deficit to 83-82, courtesy of a 10-2 run, highlighted by Brian Cardinal’s three-point play. The T’Wolves came right back with McCants’ three-pointer on the other end with 7:02 to play, Minnesota’s first field goal of the stanza.

Bobby Jackson’s jumper pulled the Grizzlies within 86-84, but the Timberwolves pulled away with a 12-4 spurt. Davis scored seven points, including a three- point play to cap the run.

The Timberwolves hit six of their first seven shots and grabbed a 14-5 edge on Davis’ turnaround jumper. Blount scored 12 points in the quarter and Minnesota led 30-24 after 12 minutes of play.

Memphis opened the second quarter with a 13-5 spurt, capped by Jackson’s three-pointer, to give the Grizzlies their first lead of the game, 37-35.

Gasol’s three-point play cut the lead to one with 23 seconds to play in the half, but McCants drained a trey with time running down to give the T’Wolves a 58-54 margin.
