Philadelphia, PA (Basketball News) - Allen Iverson poured in 32 points and in the process moved up the NBA’s all-time scoring list, as Philadelphia swept a home-and-home series with New York, 114-95, at the Wachovia Center.
Iverson passed Isiah Thomas and Chet Walker into 41st place on the all-time scoring list on a night that the Sixers’ superstar drained 9-of-16 shots from the floor. Chris Webber and Andre Iguodala both totaled 20 points while Iguodala also dished out 10 assists and grabbed eight rebounds in Philadelphia’s second straight victory over the Knicks. Philadelphia beat New York on Friday, 117-112, at Madison Square Garden.
The Sixers also increased their lead in the race for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot to 1 1/2 games over idle Chicago.
Jamal Crawford scored 23 points, Steve Francis contributed 18 points and Eddy Curry scored 14 points for New York, which was in a state of flux again on Sunday night. Stephon Marbury (strained left patella tendon) and Jalen Rose (plantar fasciitis) did not play as the Knicks dropped their eighth straight game.
The Knicks trailed 31-26 after the opening stanza and fell behind 47-40 during the second period before ripping off seven straight points to tie the game. New York did its damage at the foul line, converting on 5-of-5 from the stripe during the stretch. Francis’ two free throws squared the contest with 3:36 remaining.
Philadelphia took control for the remainder of the half. Iverson drained a technical free throw and converted a three-point play to give the Sixers a 57-50 lead with 1:32 on the clock.
Webber then buried a turnaround hook shot and Iguodala closed the first-half scoring with a pair of free throws, as the Sixers tallied the final eight points to take a 61-50 advantage.
The Sixers held an 89-76 advantage after three periods.
Philadelphia tallied the first eight points of the final period to put the game out of reach. Iguodala started the period with a pair of free throws and two baskets by Steven Hunter bookended a John Salmons’ dunk.
The lead grew to 106-83 when Shavlik Randolph completed a three-point play with 6:13 left to play.
The Sixers led comfortably the rest of the way.
