NBA Game Summary - New York at Portland

Portland, OR (Basketball News) - Damon Stoudamire poured in 25 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out six assists to lead Portland over New York, 103-96, at the Rose Garden.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim collected 17 points and Ruben Patterson chipped in 16 off the bench for the Trailblazers, who snapped a seven-game losing skid. Travis Outlaw had 14 points and Joel Przybilla pulled down a game-high 15 boards in the win.

Tim Thomas led all scorers with 30 points for the Knicks, who dropped their second straight contest and have now lost three of five. Stephon Marbury finished with 21 points and 11 assists in the losing effort. Malik Rose recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Trailing 80-75 going into the fourth quarter, New York opened the stanza with an 9-4 surge, tying the game at 84-84 on Marbury’s layup with 8:50 left in the contest.

The game continued to remain close over the next several minutes with neither team going ahead by more than three points. However, Portland was able to grab a five-point cushion after Patterson’s jumper made it 97-92 with less than four minutes to go.

Marbury brought the Knicks within three two possessions later on a jumper in the lane, while Thomas made it a one-point contest after hitting a pair from the free throw line with 1:55 left.

After Patterson hit a pair at the line, New York was unable to convert on its next possession, but Stoudamire hit only 1-of-2 from the line, giving the Blazers a 100-96 lead.

On the Knicks’ next opportunity, Jamaal Crawford missed a three-pointer that would have made it a one-point game, thus sealing the victory for Portland.

Portland led 26-22 after one quarter and carried a 52-42 lead into the break. New York battled back in the third frame, opening the stanza on a 12-4 run, but still trailed by five after three quarters.
