The Wizards kicked off their homestand in winning fashion on Wednesday, as Gilbert Arenas poured in a game-high 28 points and Antawn Jamison added 20 points and 15 rebounds to pace Washington to a 96-89 win over the Portland Trail Blazers.
Jarvis Hayes scored 13 points and converted a clutch three-point play late in the game for the Wizards, who have won two of their last three games. Brendan Haywood had 13 points and Caron Butler added 12 off the bench in the win.
Joel Przybilla’s basket pulled Portland within 91-89, but Arenas nailed a jump shot and Hayes converted a three-point play, giving the Wizards a 96-89 edge with 18.8 seconds on the clock to seal the victory.
Washington, which will conclude its stand on Tuesday versus the lowly Toronto Raptors, is 4-2 in its arena this season.
Milwaukee also enters tonight’s tilt on a winning note after Andrew Bogut scored 19 points, pulled down 14 rebounds and blocked Jason Terry’s shot at the overtime buzzer to boost the Bucks to a 113-111 win over the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday at the Bradley Center.
The Bucks played without their leading scorer, as guard Michael Redd missed the contest because of a right quadriceps contusion. However, it was this year’s No. 1 pick in the NBA draft, who helped the Bucks post just their second win in six games.
Two free throws by Bogut extended Milwaukee to a 112-108 lead with 20.9 seconds left in OT. Terry then hit a three-pointer with 5.2 seconds left, but T.J. Ford, who had 24 points and seven assists in the win, made one foul shot with 4.6 seconds remaining.
Dallas was left without a timeout, but Terry dribbled all the way to the right side of the lane where he met Bogut. However, the 7-foot center got his left hand on the ball, which bounced out of bounds as time expired. Terry went tumbling to the floor, but it was a clean block for the powerful Bogut.
Redd is questionable for tonight’s affair.
The Bucks, who will start a two-game homestand after tonight’s contest, are 3-4 away from home this season.
Milwaukee dropped three of four to the Wizards last season, but has won six of 10 and seven of the last 12 meetings. The Bucks have also had success in our nation’s capital, where they have won six of nine and seven of their last 11.
