|
(Basketball News) - The Minnesota Timberwolves suffered their first loss of the season on Thursday, as they were handed a 94-92 overtime setback at the hands of the Denver Nuggets at the Pepsi Center.
Kevin Garnett finished with 25 points and 15 rebounds for Minnesota, which fell to 1-1 on the young season. Trenton Hassell contributed 17 points and Latrell Sprewell chipped in 13 in the losing effort.
The teams were tied at 92-92 with a minute to go in the extra session.
Minnesota gained possession, but Sprewell was called for charging in the lane, which swung the arrow the other way. With 27 ticks to go, Denver pushed the ball up the floor and Earl Boykins nailed a long shot from the left side for the lead.
A late second shot by Garnett fell short.
The Timberwolves eliminated Denver in five games in the opening round of last season’s playoffs. Minnesota, which made good on 45 percent of its field goals in Thursday’s loss, is 4-12 in road openers all-time.
Minnesota will return to action on Saturday when they host the New Orleans Hornets. The Timberwolves took both matchups against the Hornets last season and have won three straight and six of the last seven meetings. Minny is also 10-5 all-time at home against the Hornets.
