Concern in Laker-Nation for Kobe Bryant’s Pinkie Injury?

February 08 08

My AM Take: Could a dislocated pinkie temporarily dislocate the Lakers? After all, this isn’t any pinkie-it is attached to the shooting hand of Kobe Bryant.

On Tuesday, three days after his purple-and-gold acquired All-Star Pau Gasol, Bryant injured his finger in a win against the Nets. The pain limited Mamba’s shooting (he went 4-for-16 from the floor), so he drew double-teams and facilitated for teammates.

One day later, word of the superstar’s injury was common knowledge. Atlanta, L.A.’s opponent on Wednesday, pestered Bryant into a 3-for-13 shooting performance and came away with a 98-95 win.

Shooting hand injuries can be precarious. And even though the Lakers have upgraded their talent, the Atlanta game showed they need Bryant injury-free and performing at an elite level to win.

And his health isn’t a given. This morning, several publications are reporting that Bryant could skip the upcoming All-Star game because of his injured pinkie.

Bryant also admitted it might be best for him and the Lakers to skip the All-Star Game. He is scheduled to participate in the 3-point shooting contest Feb. 16 and to make his 10th consecutive All-Star appearance in the game the next day.

"We’ll have to see how it goes," he said. "You’ve got to do the right thing."

Remember, Kobe Bean is a mega-star who loves performing for fans and taking his spot amongst the game’s greats. So something must be up for him to even consider missing the mid-season classic.

Right now, Bryant’s injury isn’t a major concern. After so much drama, it’s ironic and scary that a pinkie finger could potentially disrupt Laker-nation’s dream of post-season glory.
