Does Jason Kidd Have The Right To Ask New Jersey Nets For Trade?

January 27 08

The Newark Star-Ledger reports on Jason Kidd’s issues with the New Jersey Nets:

"He’s tired of what the team has become, and it shows," said one friend of Kidd’s, remaining anonymous so as not to be critical of the Nets’ captain. "And I doubt even an extension would make him happy at this point."
My AM Take: Jason Kidd doesn’t like what New Jersey has become. And, through his agent, he has requested a trade to a contending team.

On the one hand, Kidd has every right to ask for a trade. He’s the best point guard of his generation; a triple-double machine who holds it down on defense, too.

On the other hand, Kidd made his bed in Brick City and should lie in it. Years ago, as a free agent, he chose New Jersey over San Antonio.

He said no to Tim Duncan. He passed on Tony Parker as his backcourt mate. And he said thanks but no thanks to Gregg Popovich’s 103 million dollar contract offer.

Instead, Kidd re-signed with the Nets-a franchise he led to the NBA Finals, but were better known for mediocrity.

Sure enough, San Antonio has remained a perennial contender, while New Jersey –after a short run at the top of the Eastern Conference- has struggled to find consistency.

How can a player claim to now be about winning, when he passed on the opportunity for greatness years ago?

Like I said Jason Kidd has every right to ask for a trade. Whether he deserves to be accommodated is another question.

The fact is, it doesn’t matter if he deserves it or not. The question is will management oblige? NJ has been in love with J Kidd for years and after last summer’s USA basketball hype the rest of the country has developed a little crush, too. If the Nets give up Kidd they are forced into a firesale and I’m just not sure that would do that. Finally, which contender could he go to? Probably western conference which excludes the Suns, Warriors, and Hornets who already have great PGs. That leaves: Dallas, Denver, LA, Houston, or Portland. That’s not even considering who they would get in return. Maybe he can ask the Lakers to give up Bynum now\1 .

Kidd chose New Jersey over San Antonio for one reason. He wanted to win in New Jersey. After failing for 2 straight seasons he felt there was unfinished business in Jersey. "How can a player claim to now be about winning, when he passed on the opportunity for greatness years ago?" Are you serious? That’s your argument? Think before you write. .

j-kidd has been playing his heart out for quite a while now, no one can say that he hasnt put his best effort out on the court every time he steps on the hardwood...it is just very apparent that the nets are not going anywhere but down right now...he has every right to request a trade, if jkidd was some punk rookie, of course he wouldnt have the right to ask for a trade, but he’s jkidd, the man is an amazing player..and he should be traded not only for himself, but for the nets too, they need some sort of major change, and chances are, this has to be it...and if people are talking about who should be grateful...shouldn’t the nets be grateful that jkidd chose to stay with the nets instead of going to the spurs? he’s been with this team through thick and thin, so maybe it’s the nets that should be grateful to kidd. .

Shut up kid. You have alot to learn. And if you think you’re an "all-star" already think again. Jason Kidd, is a good player, but should not be demanding sh*t. He should be grateful, and nothing else. .

J-Kidd can demand anything he wants, and they should give it to him. If he says I want to own the franchise they should sign the team over to him. He derserves the world and is entitled to it. .

Nobody "deserves" a trade. These guys are all overpaid to play a damn game. Kidd is lucky to have had everything that he has had in NJ. Despite whatever other mistakes they made in the Finals, if Kidd had shot the ball better, the Nets would have been World Champions in 2003. Kidd has built a legacy as a Net. He is not "owed" anything. Why should any NBA team screw themselves over simply to appease one player? I don’t care who it is... Nobody is owed anything in this league. If anything, Kidd owes it to his teammates, his coaches, and his franchise to shut up and play. .
