Help Wanted in Phoenix: Cassell and Livingston should backup Nash

July 19 08

Help Wanted: a back-up point guard, capable of playing fifteen minutes per night, running half-court sets, and filling-in when the starter is hurt.

The Phoenix Suns must have considered placing the above ad in newspapers and Craig’s List. Since luring Steve Nash back to the desert in July of 2004, the team has failed to find a decent second-string table-setter.

Leandro Barbosa is a scorer. Eddie House is a shooter, so he moved on to New Jersey before winning an NBA Title with Boston. And Marcus Banks sat for two seasons and then got dealt to Miami.

Of course, Boris Diaw and Grant Hill can play point guard in an emergency. But the Suns – if they want to preserve their star and make another playoff run – have to find a backup for Nash.

Thankfully, a Help Wanted ad may be unnecessary. According to The Arizona Republic, Phoenix is looking to add depth at the one-spot by signing a veteran and taking a chance on a former can’t-miss prospect.

Phoenix will pursue Sam Cassell, Damon Stoudamire or Jason Williams to be its backup point and Carlos Arroyo if he fell to minimum-contract status. Shaun Livingston, a 22-year-old former No. 4 pick, could be brought in if he checks out with the medical staff.

Bringing-in former Clippers Cassell and Livingston is a great idea. Last year, I covered the Steve Nash Charity Classic in Vancouver, where Cassell played on Nash’s team. These two had obvious on-court chemistry, which goes back to their time together in Phoenix.

Cassell could play fifteen minutes per night at point guard and also line-up next to Nash at off-guard. The Suns’ veterans would ensure Gollum keeps his emotions, and mouth, in check, too.

However, Livingston is the wild card. This kid had blue-chip superstar written all over him. Unfortunately, the Clippers rushed him and he suffered a terrible knee injury.

With Phoenix, there’d be no pressure for him to play next year. He could watch Nash and rehab with the club’s famous training staff. In two years, who knows? Livingston’s potential is worth a minimum contract.

Nash needs a veteran backup. Finding a point guard for the future wouldn’t be a bad idea either.

Who should Phoenix sign? Cassell? Stoudamire? Williams? Arroyo? Livingston? Let us know in the comment box below and come back to HoopsVibe The Blog fore more info. Image courtesy of tragicx01’s on-line portfolio.

They should bring in Damon Stoudamire. The guy scored 54 points in a game for Portland and was Rookie of the Year in Toronto. He’s been out of the spotlight for a while but that happens when you have big injuries. Give him a chance at backup and you’ll see why most teams (those that don’t have Steve Nash) would be glad to have him as a starter. .

I think the Suns Should Bring In Livingston if he checks out. If he is healthy it will be a Major Coup. Livingston is like 6’8" he can play off the 1 spot and hold big guards. He hasn’t put on his man weight yet! For Contract purposes I would also Get J-Will and let them run it. HE likes that type of game! .

Don’t get on this site and trash the Phoenix Suns, this is our team and we stand behind it win or lose. Didn’t your mother ever teach you there is more to a team than simply winning. Steve Nash is a GREAT point guard and will go down in history as such. ANY player would be LUCKY to be able to play for the SUNS. .

The Suns should trade Steve Nash and Leandro Barbosa to Chicago in a sign-and-trade for Loul Deng and Ben Gordon. At this point in his career, how much more productive would Nash be for the Suns than the combination of Jason Williams and Stephon Marbury? .

The Suns should sign Stephon Marbury to the Veteran’s Minimum contract once the Knicks buy him out and release him. Then, the Suns should sign Jason Williams to a minimum contract. Then trade Steve Nash either for Lamar Odom, Shawn Marion or another young athletic small forward. .

Hi Edboswell. Thanks for reading and taking the time to comment. When I refer to the Clippers rushing Livingston, I mean too much was placed on him at a young age. Remember, he came straight from high school and clearly lacked an NBA body. Certainly, the Clippers aren’t the Clippers of old, but they needed to do more to help him develp. The team expected too much from him and never truly provided an atmosphere for him to fully excel. A change of scenery, like Phoenix, could do him good. Thanks again for reading ... .

How does one "rush" a basketball player? Livingston was averaging not over 30 minutes a game. Basketball players are not like baseball pitchers. If they never took Livingston out of the games, fine, but that is not true. People blow out knees by landing ackwardly, which is what happened to Livingston, and it was not late in a game he played huge minutes in..... cheers .

we’ll see how the suns fair this coming season with a new coach and probably new playing style. dont be such a hater ’backed by da spurs,’ no, i don’t think we know what you mean when you say "we all know why won them" care to elaborate? care to point out anyone on the spurs that should have won it, with logical and non biased remarks? im not a suns fan, but nash is an amazing point guard and you’re ridiculous to say that nash isn’t in the top 5 pgs-> cp3, nash, kidd, parker, and maybe d-will. how many pg’s in the league can you honestly say are better than nash? have a favorite team/player, but don’t be biased, clouds ur judgment.nash totally needs a backup pg that is actually a pg and not just a scorer. cassell is not leaving the c’s for the suns. .

Wow. Strong words from The Alamo. What are your thoughts Phoenix? I`ll ask this: point blank, is Nash a top five point guard? In my mind, yes. Absolutely. Doesn`t matter what your favorite team is. Nash is still an elite table-setter .

The Suns can bring-in however they like ... it don’t matter, They suck, they whine, they are overrated, defense wins NBA titles, not some fantasy league scoring team, and, most importantly, they can’t beat my spurs. Not even close. they suck, they can’t hang, and are overrated. I’d even prefer the Lakers over the Suns. At least, they don’t make excuses like blaming Stern and refs etc. Nash isn’t even a top five point guard anymore, take away his MVPs too, we all know why won them, right? .
