Miami Heat Interested In Ron Artest Playing With Shaquille O’Neal & Dwyane WadeAugust 26 07 Heat Coach Pat Riley uses one of three standard responses when reporters ask about Miami acquiring Ron Artest from Sacramento.
1) Sometimes Riley denies the rumor, claiming the Heat has no interest in the forward. What did Shakespeare say: "Thou protest too much Pat."
2) Sometime Riley ignores the question and, in his mind, answers the question he wanted the reporter to ask. Here’s an example:
Reporter: Coach, Riley, what’s your response to the Artest rumors?
Riley (in his mind): I got this suit on South Beach. It’s a Hugo Boss. I’m quite pleased with it.
3) Riley usually downplays the Artest rumor, admitting Miami has only talked to Sacramento about their temperamental player. Nothing more.
On Friday, Riley used option three, conceding that the Heat has just looked into acquiring Artest. On-paper, this move makes sense. Artest would become Miami’s third scorer; when Shaquille O’Neal and Dwyane Wade struggle, Ron-Ron picks up the slack with his inside-outside power game.
On defense, Artest would guard all five positions. And with Posey migrating north to Boston, he would automatically become the club’s lockdown specialist.
Artest’s spirited and physical play would breathe life into an aging Heat squad. But that’s also the problem. Artest, while well-intentioned, is too spirited. Wherever he’s played, he’s gotten in trouble. Ironically, in 2003, as a Pacer, Artest was suspended after he got into a shoving match with Riley on the Heat sideline.
Riley knows first-hand that trading for Artest is risky. But the Eastern Conference has improved. So the Heat must consider all options.
