Missed Opportunities: Should Phoenix Suns Have Traded Amare Stoudemire To Get Kevin Garnett?

January 19 08

My Quick Take: All seems well in Phoenix. ‘Seven Seconds to Shoot’ has run to a 28-12 record, good for first in the Western Conference.

But ominous clouds could be forming over the Arizona desert. Chemistry is apparently an issue. And Tony Mejia of CBS Sports reports Phoenix is once again considering moving Amare Stoudemire:

Sources around the league have told CBSSports.com that there are internal discussions being held in Phoenix regarding the availability of star center Amare Stoudemire, who can opt out of his current deal following the 2009-10 season. According to sources, there is one faction within the organization willing to deal the two-time All-Star, while another is dead set against it.

I have two problems with the Suns’ front office entertaining offers for STAT.

First, Phoenix has much invested in Stoudemire. Management has unconditionally supported him through knee surgeries and family issues. Trading the All-Star before the February deadline is a recipe for disaster. A rushed deal would make it impossible to receive equal value.

Second, Phoenix –if they wanted to move Stoudemire- should’ve swapped him in a three team deal last summer for superstar Kevin Garnett. That was the right deal; giving up a future superstar to the Hawks for an established superstar.

When a deal seemed imminent, management/ownership came down with cold feet. There were concerns about assuming Garnett’s contract, particularly paying The Big Ticket a multi-million dollar trade-kicker.

The deal died. A month later, Garnett got sent to Boston. The Celtics are now the NBA’s best team.

Perhaps, Phoenix’s real problem isn’t on-court. Perhaps, flip-flopping on the Stoudemire-Garnett deal shows the problem is with management/ownership.

If so, their regular season record will mean very little. And, in all likelihood, their season will end well short of an NBA Title.

Should Phoenix have included Stoudemire in a three team trade for Garnett? Should they move STAT now? Get at us in the comment box below or hit us up in our fan forum. Click here to read and subscribe to Oly Sandor’s NBA Blog.

Trade is not necessary.80% of the Knicks problem is Clyde Fraz..’s Negative feedback when he’s covering the game. He’s the first to criticize, the first to look for an excuse of why the opponent might lose, the last to act favorably when the knicks does something spectacular,( a good move to the barsket etc), and first to reward a move from the knicks opponents. You can tell he controlls most of the replay. Most of the crap he says about why a knick player is benched is his way of instigating, casing players not to get along.if you back to the knicks brawl he was the first to say about Nate before any penalties was issued that there were children in the audience and that he should never had reacted that way.Somethings need to be said but he’s always the first. His reaction to a dunk or a good move that Crawford does is pre-meditated. He needs to think about how to react, meanwhile the other announcers have already cheered. He’s a big reason for the boes we get. Not that we wouldn’t have got them but he does a good job adiing fuel to the fire. I wish he’d just go away. Get a Job elswhere. He does a good job pretending to be fair to all teams but he’s a fake. The only person he favors in the knicks knowadays is Marbury which is part of the problem. I guess he’ll do anything to see the knicks fall. My only guess to why he does this is that he doesn’t want to work during the play offs if knicks were to make it. That might sound silly but what other reason would he have for acting that way. The kind of abuse the knicks get from his analysis can cause havoc on any team. Causing them to second guess themselves, reacting to his Instigative remarks. Letting themselves be mislead by his lopsided remarks. I am not talkin about there most recent game I did not see it yet. I am talking about the past few years.Does anybody agree with with my assesment of his coverage?I say fire Clyde! .

seriously getting garnett would have been a bad move. you cant trade your future becuase when garnett and nash retire who will the suns have left. and garnett chokes in the playoffs, and it will probably show in boston. .

Yes, Garnett would have put Phoenix over the top. They need him with Nash getting older. .

Garnett hasn’t proved sh*t yet. It’s too early to be talking about this. Boston’s season led by Kevin is just like his 2004 T’Wolves he was great and his team did great during the regular season, but they didn’t make it over the hump in the conference finals. Phoenix can do that on their on without Garnett. It was probably smart for them not to do that deal .

Hell naw. Why does Phoeix need Garnett? That would have been a mistake. I’m gald we didn;t make that move. If you’re gonna trade for a big men, go with Andrew Bynum, Dwight Howard, ect.. my point is don’t get older with more money, when you can find talent that can help now and the long-term future .
