Playing In FIBA Eurobasket Tournament Strains Jorge Garbajosa’s Relationship With Toronto Raptors?

September 07 07

On the one hand, the Toronto Raptors must admire Jorge Garbajosa playing through injury for Spain in the FIBA EuroBasket qualifying tournament. He’s showing heart, something that was noticeably absent during the end of Vince Carter’s run in the T-dot.

On the other hand, behind closed doors, the Raptors have to be furious. Garbajosa, who broke his leg last spring, is risking his career and the Raptors’ season by playing before his injury has healed. Remember, the ‘dinos’ struggled mightily after Garbajosa got hurt. And Toronto’s doctors never cleared him to play.

Was Toronto right to try to stop Garbajosa from playing in the Olympic qualifying tournament?

Yes. As his employers, they have the right to protect their interests and to protetct the player from himself. Remember, Mark Cuban leaned on Steve Nash to essentially retire from Team Canada.

But Garbajosa had different ideas. He got cleared by his own doctors. And the Spanish basketball federation paid the insurance premium for him to play.

So why would the forward risk his livelihood? In Europe, balling for your country is the ultimate honor. The NBA takes a backseat to all international competitions. For example, Pau Gasol didn’t care that his foot injury, sustained during the World Championships, ruined Memphis’ 2006-07 season. Yesterday, Darko Milicic dropped an all-time tirade on reporters after Serbia was eliminated from the competition.

So the Raptors have to hope Garbajosa avoids further injury during Eurobasket play. His leg will eventually heal, but his relationship with the Raptors might have suffered a permanent strain.

Should Garbajosa have played for Spain? Get at us in the comment box below with your thoughts.

If you look at Jorge playing, he has great body control. You need that kind of ability to get that many offensive fouls from the opponents. He’s extremely good at that. He is not known for his extreme athleticism (not that that’s bad either), but for his sense of position and opportunity, his intelligence and ability to read the game. He plays with his head more than anything else. His March injury was truly infortunate. So even if his bone is not fully healed and can not sustain the same amount of stress he used to put on it, he knows his limits very well, what he can and can’t do at this moment with his body. And his contribution to the Spanish team is nothing short of invaluable. If you pitched me Toronto’s rationale everyday I would still agree, and to a degree I thought it was the right decision, but for the wrong reasons. I wanted a strong Garbajosa aiming for the top with Toronto for the next three or four years of pro ball he still has on him, if he heals well. When they didn’t clear him for playing, I sighed in relief. But now I see him play and I feel a different kind of relief. One that comes from watching a strong minded pro athlete putting his heart where it belongs, on the court. There is greater risk if he plays, sure, but if might be a well calculated risk.Ultimately, without him it’ll be hard to get that Euro gold medal, and we need that along with next year’s Olympic gold to seal our dinasty.¡Animo, Jorge! .

You can’t buy that kind of dedication. I wish we had more Canadians than cared that much. .

i think u r missing one big part of this oly. despite not getting as much money as u do in the NBA, u can actually still have a career outside the NBA playing for ur country. he mite be risking his NBA career but he has plenty of life left in basketball and if he chose to play ball for his country then he can still be very succesful. yes it is the dream to make it to the NBA but life goes on after the NBA. if the raptors were to dump him becoz of his loyalty to his country then i would doubt the NBA seriously and would probably just go home. i hope the raptors dont make any stupid decisions and put serious doubts in international player’s minds. P.S: lol it could be worse. d wade could have decided he wanted to play for USA haha.... .

Honestly, Garbo is a loyal guy, respect him heck of a lot, but I think he shouldn’t risk his career playing(I would too) but your country has already qualified for the Beijing Olympics so in my opinion there is no point...but I still admire him and wish the best. .

Garbajosa loves to play for his country, but he is intelligent enough as to not risk the remaining of is career for it. I am confident that whether he decided to play, it was only because his leg was OK. On the other hand, I find difficult to critisize anyone who shows that admirable disposition to play for his country. He even offered to pay part of the insurance from his money ,1 million bucks! .
