Report: Philadelphia 76ers Fire Billy King & Hire New Jersey Nets’ Ed Stefanski

December 04 07

The Associated Press reports on the 76ers making changes:

Billy King’s reign in Philadelphia appears to be over.

The Philadelphia Daily News is reporting that the Sixers plan to fire their general manager and replace him with New Jersey Nets general manager Ed Stefanski. Stefanski is expected to sign a multiyear contract, and his introduction will come at a Tuesday news conference, according to the newspaper.

My Very Quick Take: Something had to give. The 76ers had become irrelevant, playing before tiny crowds and losing millions of dollars each season.

And that something was King. This is fair. Philadelphia’s long-time GM overpaid marginal talent and never had a vision for the club.

Stefanski should help. He has been a big part of the turnaround in New Jersey.

The new GM has three immediate tasks. First, he must re-store the 76ers’ brand and get Philadelphia interested in basketball again. Second, he must convince rising star Andre Iguodala to sign a contract extension. Finally, he must decide to trade or keep veteran point guard Andre Miller.

Stefanski has his work cut out for him. Is Pat Croce available for a reunion?

More to come as details emerge. Tell us what you think about King getting fired in the comment box below?

Pure racism. If they start gettin rid of the brothers of color. They starting from the top and heading down to all the way to the last black player. I guess the team wants to go for the new Casper look, if you know what I mean. .

If Mo cheeks gets fired to, that is plan racism, and I won’t stand for it. I will protest 76ers games. How do you expect the black man to succeed when you, ain’t given him the neccessary tools to use to, accomplish great things. .
