Why Phoenix’s Steve Nash is the NBA’s funniest player

November 02 08

I often think NBA stars take themselves too seriously. The third-person references, twenty-deep entourages, and indulgent talk of self-branding are too much.

I understand it, though. And I don’t blame the athletes, either. With so much money on the table, today’s players have to be schooled in the business of basketball. LeBron James is the perfect example, trademarking his ‘King James’ logo in the tenth grade.

In this money-driven climate, I appreciate athletes who respect the game and possess a sense of humour. Steve Nash is a great example. He competes each night. And has no issue laughing at his own star persona.

Check out the two-time MVP mocking celebrity spokesmen, photo shoots, and training sessions in these videos. Thanks to yahoo’s ball don’t lie (a great blog) for originally finding these sketches.

What do you think of Nash taking jabs at his star persona? Is he the NBA’s funniest personality? Get at us in the comment box below and return to HoopsVibe the Blog for more NBA tidbits. Photo courtesy of Mission Product.

Nash here. I really do love vitawater. But I’m paid to say that. I know most of you won’t believe that its me but I really love to blog. THE MVP is coming back this season. I’m planing on scoring over 90 points in one game at some point during the month of December. For all of you gamblers, it will probably be against the trailblazers. Rock on,The Canadian,Steve Nash .

Hi there, thanks for all the comments and reading. If you love this or hate it doesn’t really matter, you took the time. So that is appreciated. I have been pretty clear that I have a lot of time for Nash’s based on his role in the community. As a former volunteer coach in Vancouver I remember Nash writing a large six figure check to save a basketball league that was going bankrupt because the NBA pulled funding when they left. The NBA made a long-term committment to that program and Nash filled the void. So yeah, I like him as a person and respect his efforts in the community. The vancouver youth league has expanded throughout Canada. That said, I don’t love his game unconditionally. And I still take heat from Canadians for not rating him as the top pg and picking Dirk as my 2007 MVP. He is an amazing passer and plays the game like a center midfielder in soccer. His ability to hit cutters with both hands is sensational. He has also an outstanding ability to include teammates and hit open shots. But Nash, while willing, is just an average defender. His size is a liability. And frankly, I’m not sure MVPs should only be allowed to play one-end of the court. Still, he is a Hall of Fame pg and a decent person, so I have time for him. Clear? Now you know. Thanks for reading and writing etc. Get back at me with thoughts on this. .

Another notable difference is that you pay to read the newspaper. This website is free. If you hate it so much, don’t visit again. Nobody’s forcing you to read the articles, and nobody’s charging you a cent for anything. .

Hey franchise it’s a fu*king difference when you’re a city newspaper sports writer, and a internet basketball blogger. Of course you’re suppose to hear more things about your local sports teams from a local writer. Sandor is a dick rider, and just like other writers on here they talk about the same sh*t every other week .

yall cant blame oly, nash is from his city and gave victoria bc someone great to root for. I dont hear anyone complaining that plasche makes too much l.a. based articles or that stephen a smith makes too much n.y. based articles why? because they are natives of those respective cities, its like telling a kobe fan to stop being a kobe fan. It just wont work. .

I’m starting to worry about him as well, the steve nash articles and your high praise for him is getting serious. I hope you don’t have some time a shrine of Steve Nash at home and when you wake up you pray to him, that would be pretty bad. Steve was funny on though .
